Dear Hygienic,

I congratulate your company on achieving ISO 22000 certification without apparently understanding the basic requirements of an internal audit.

I'm sure a lot of people are interested in knowing yr audit company's name ? ;)

If you are also certified to ISO 9001, i suggest you borrow the methodology in the Quality Procedures Manual. That's what i did for BRC

The correct way to establish a audit checklist of your own is:

1- Study standard and your own documented system.

2- Identify your functions and departments (if you have planned to do internal audit function/department wise - most common approach.

3- Or identify your processes (if you have planned to do internal audit process wise - less common approach).

4- Make separate lists (function/department wise or process wise) containing simple questions/checkpoints related to that function/department/process.

5- All questions or checkpoints should come under the scope of concerned standard and your documented system.

I have some sample checklists collected from IFSQN and other sites.
Some checklists have not organized as per ISO 22000 structure. I have added them here to give you just an idea and additional information.

Attached File  ISO_22000_condensed_Check_List_.doc   175.5KB   1761 downloads

Attached File  Checklist_ISO_22000.doc   191.5KB   1608 downloads
Attached File  22000___Checklist__2_.doc   290KB   1495 downloads

Do remember! Above checklists are just sample. You should mould them according to your own documented system.

I afraid! This is not the only case!!!.

I always surprised, whether ISO is established just to make standards and IAF is made just to register a CB. It is not of their concern how a "registered CB" is playing with their reputation. They have made super classic standards and systems and now sleeping with sweet dreams.

If I may...

Typically, an internal audit checklist doesn't need a 'format', and certainly not one based on the standard. Internal auditors can produce what ever style of checklist they like, especially if it's not written into your procedure. In my 20+ years experience of internal audits, I'd strongly recommend you treat a checklist like a shopping list you'd take to the store. Of course, when starting out, you need more written down, as you become more confident and experienced, less written down, (well, maybe).

The most important aspect of this planning activity, is the process of studying the requirements of the process you're going to audit - not what the checklist form looks like!

Well, maybe 60-40? ( ) but I totally agree with yr comment.

Nonetheless, there are posts here which have regarded the internal audit as primarily a document only check (referring BRC) and this has apparently satisfied auditors. Personally I found this rather remarkable.

Agreed, Charles. Sadly it's so true. I dream of a day when internal audits are valued by management first and foremost, not simply placating external auditors - as some form of basic compliance issue.

Agreed also on the 60/40 split. I should have made my comments on the individual's planning for an audit, not the other broader issues of selecting what to audit, when, what criteria to use etc.

Yes you may prepare the internal audit checklist according to ISO 22000.  However, you also need to consider the scope of you FSMS in your checklist.

Hi Twinsen,

afaik,  iso22000:2015 does not exist.

You are querying a 9-year old post so presumably refers to the 1st (2005) version.

Kind Regards,
