Hi Everyone,

Can I please have someone reply to my post. I need this urgently as i have my audit due soon.

Appreciate your help.

I will look forward to your prompt response.

Hi sarah35

We have the following cleaning chemical control procedure (BRC Standard);

1. All chemicals used on site are purchased form an approved supplier that are specialists in the supply and use of chemicals in food production areas.

2. A list of approved chemicals for purchase is held by technical

3. The chemical company supplies material safety data sheet and specifications for all existing chemicals and any new chemicals prior to supply.

4. Only chemicals that have been confirmed by the chemical supplier as suitable for food use are used.

5. Chemical products with strong scent will not be used.

6. Chemicals are clearly identified with a product label.

7. Chemicals are stored in designated areas, as follows:

- Bulk IBC / 200 litre Drums / 25 litre drums of chemicals outside the warehouse

- Small packs of chemicals such as hand soap, toilet cleaner etc, are stored inside the warehouse.

- Bulk caustic in storage tank at back of Main Factory Building

- Bulk IBC of chemicals outside in the corner of the yard at the back of main Factory Building

8. Working quantities of chemicals are stored in designated secure areas within production facility to avoid contact with food. Where possible, chemicals are automatically dosed.

9. Only authorised and trained members of staff use chemicals.

We have kept is as simple as possible and we've not had any problems with it to date.

Hope it helps.

Also:

Procedures are documented that ensure chemicals and dangerous goods are used and handled according to their label instructions and employees are trained in the appropriate use, storage and handling
Are premises that store or handle dangerous goods as defined by local regulations:

I. Licensed by local authority covering all classifications of dangerous goods

II. Warning signage is posted a appropriate locations to assure awareness of potential risk

III. Policy and procedures established to protect the health and safety of personnel and property

IV. Updated emergency contact numbers, such as local fire and rescue is posted

Does the chemical control program include procedures on: I. Storage and secondary containment of chemicals stored on site

II. Disposition of expired or otherwise unusable chemicals, including material contaminated there with

Compliance with pertinent local regulations and standards

Are there functional emergency eye and hand wash stations located in high risk areas for the protection, health and welfare of employees?

To sarah35:

Also consider the below:-

a) Proper control on the issuance of chemicals

b) Emergency handling e.g. spillage

c) Standard for dilution etc., if required

d) Layout for the storage location of non-food chemical

I would say you need to include it in your inventory of chemicals on site and it should be stored securely away from food processing areas.

The above are all very helpful suggestions. However, ensure that your policy/procedures address all of the bullet points in section 5.9.1.2 as applicable to your operation.

All chemicals used on a food plant must be covered by the Chemical Control Program

Just develop the procedure to encompass the entire 5.9.1.2, as previously stated. I just got done writing our program last week and the Maintenance Manager is filling in all of our chemicals. Once complete we will verify we have an MSDS on file for each. Chemicals need to be approved before bring into the facility. I created a request form for this that will be maintained in our chemical control program binder. This also includes contractors. Think of each bulletpoint as kind of a separate procedure within the main procedure. When you get started it will flow. Never be afraid to create another form for documentation, such as the log you need to list the chemicals and a request form so you have proof it was reviewed and approved. Here we need two approvers.

Ha, we're doing the same thing.  We are very tiny and in a small, affluent area, so my Maintenance guy found it pretty amusing that I would want to take inventory of the chemicals and probably assumes I'm huffing them.

Me: "Yup we need inventory of all the chemicals, even the oil you use for your machinery in the shop that only you can touch because it's locked."

Mechanic:" Why?"

Me: "So we know how much we have and how much we use and can notice if we're missing a bunch because some looney dumped it in our chocolate"

Mechanic:"...."

Me:"Really"

Mechanic:".....Really?"

Me:"Yes, that is a real possibility that we actually have to consider happening, plan for, and document our planning for."

Mechanic:"You're so busy, Majors"

Now that is funny Majors! I get the same thing from people but when I explain why they usually get it. The way you put it covers both the food safety and the food defense aspect. Your reply gave me a reminder to keep the defense part in my thoughts when I write these policies. But yes, many people think it is silly to do all of these things lol. We have over 250 employees and it is a chore to get people to wear the hair nets and beard nets correctly.
