We are looking to Trace product back to each packing line. We have 16 packing lines and more specifically we are looking to trace back to the employee packing the product. We are going to use this tracability exercise to assist us in seeing how well each employee is doing at their job; employee reviews.  Each packing line contains a label put on product, however I do not want to write the individuals name on the label. I believe I want to assign each employee a number and write the number on the label.

Does anyone have experience in doing such a thing. I would like to know some pro's and con's, what I should and should not do, etc. for doing this so I set the program up to succeed.

Thanks everyone!

What is the speed of your lines?  Does your labeling system have the capability to add a number?  Years ago, I worked in the furniture industry and they used a stamp with initials (But I'm sure you could get numbers) to identify who did repair work on items.

I don't know if that's even a possibility with your operation.

We are only concerned about one particular customer and it takes roughly 30 minutes to pack one pallet of product for them. We pack roughly 30 pallets a day for this customer and all pallets might contain 8 different employees that pack the same item. Then the product gets labeled with a label about the size of a half a sheet of paper. So it is a rather slow moving process. I believe we wouldnt be able to print the number on the actual label because we run alot of the same product on different lines. It would be very time consuming and not cost effective to have our label maker machine record all these different numbers for one product. It doesnt seem to efficient to run the numbers off on the actual label so we thought we would have our 2 pallet movers carry a writing utensil with a sheet of paper (containing employees name and number provided to them) to record the number of the employee packing that particular product. We do not want to have to have our line employees carry a writing utensil to record their number for fear they might drop it in a box of product.

Thanks!

-would it be possible / reasonable to provide each operator with one of those old time pre-inked stampers?  We used to wear them in a grocery store environment in a hip holster.  Or would that not work in a food environment?

Being SQF certified, I believe it would be hard to allow our line employees to carry such a liquid. For fear it might leak and spill onto packaging material or worse our product. I try to refrain from allowing any of our line employees carry anything for those reasons. This is why I think my only option is to have our employees who take the pallet from the line employee, carry a marker of some sort and mark a designated number given to each employee.

Any thoughts or ideas might help! :)

We have our boxers check out/in a number stamp at the start/end of each shift so we have a record for tracibility, evaluating, etc.  Seems to work well.  Stamps are always accounted for by turning them in at the end of the shift.

You can get electronic fob systems with a monitor on each line, the operator clocks into the line and it is recorded also with a list of his duties. We have fobs for clocking in and out for breaks etc and it is the same fob and just an extension of that with either the monitor positioned on a piece of equipment or close to the line as possible.
