Good day!

What is the difference between ISO 22002 - 1 and SANS 10049 (PRP standards)? Do you choose which one you want to implement when you do FSSC 22000 or do you implement both?

Thanks!

Dear Maretha,

Perhaps slightly OT but you may find this short thread of interest -

Dear Maretha,

Not a user of either iso22000, fssc22000, or SA standards  but based on the history of fssc22000 and the sub-link included in my previously quoted post, i would anticipate the former. Unless a local prerogative has been exercised ?.

PS - regarding difference between iso22002-1 and SA standard, no idea unfortunately. I was unable to locate a summary or direct comparison anywhere. Maybe you have a better idea?

Kind Regards,

Dear Maretha,

Based on a draft version of Sans 10049, there are substantial differences between iso22002-1 and Sans10049.

The answer I was looking for is ISO 22002. When you implement FSSC 22000 you don't have a choice of which PRP standard you want to implement. It has to be ISO 22002.

Dear Maretha,

Yes, that certainly agrees with every (FSSC) posted food HACCP plan i have seen on this forum (subsequent to discontinuance of any PAS Food option).

Although some later PAS documents have maybe not yet acquired ISO equivalents ?

Is a specific ISO-only requirement actually written down somewhere in the FSSC standard / website ?

Just had PRP training yesterday and that is what our instructor said. For FSSC implementation you have to use ISO 22002 as your PRP standard. If you just do ISO 22000 accreditation you can use ISO 22002 or SANS 10049, whichever you prefer.

Dear Maretha,

Thks for info. I wonder if this is a specific SA interpretation ?

For ISO22000, i believe the source of PRPs is totally optional for typical certifications, ie para 7.2.3. This aspect/consequences was one of the primary causes for initiating FSSC22000 (hence my original anticipation of a  limited choice for FSSC). Maybe, for ISO22000, SA is an exception of course. Nonetheless, most people now probably opt for ISO22002-X anyway, or PAS if it exists.

Dear Maretha,

I have (probably) validated yr instructor with respect to fssc22000.

AFAI can see, the official answer (dated 04042014) to yr OP is on pg5 of following attachment. It mentions ISO 22002-1, PAS 222, PAS 223. The PAS referenced PRPs are for feed production and manufacturing food packaging materials respectively.

Attached File  fss1 - fssc,1-3-1(2014).pdf   113.91KB   36 downloadsf

The May fssc factsheet below includes 2  statements –

(1) Developed to meet the needs of the global supply chain, FSSC 22000 delivers a GFSI benchmarked certification scheme which incorporates the requirements of the ISO standards and pre requisite programs (ISO 22000, ISO 22003, ISO/TS 22002-1, ISO/TS 22002-4 and PAS 222) for the certification of food safety management systems in the manufacture and provision of food packaging.

The above indicates (with GFSI recognition) that PAS 223 has now been replaced by iso22002-4.

(2) The ISO/TS 22002-4 – ISO 22000 combination alone DOES NOT meet the GFSI requirements1. However when used in conjunction with FSSC 22000, the combination achieves the requirements of the GFSI benchmarked standards. Packaging manufacturers that already hold an ISO 22000 and ISO/TS 22002-4 certificate can upgrade to a full FSSC 22000 certificate. The only step that needs to be taken is for the

FSSC 22000 licensed certification body to validate whether the previous ISO 22000 and ISO/TS 22002-4 certification meets the FSSC 22000 requirements.

( 1  The GFSI Guidance Document and the ISO 22000 standard are written and constructed differently. The Guidance Document is not a standard by itself, but sets out the minimum requirements for the delivery of conforming schemes and full compliance by the scheme is required to achieve GFSI benchmarking.)

I have no idea what the details mean but the result appears to be confirmation that PAS223 is replaced.
