Hi team

we are buying some tree nuts and they all seem to come under a "voetstoots" clause .

I am trying to find some equipment that can help us remove hair and string (we already have  laser sorters but they don't do much to hair/ string ) as this seems like the most common  contaminants in the products especially cashews.

can you guys assist in my search.

Thanks

we do some manual  inspection but its too slow. We  do have some Electrostatic charge type system for removing foreign matter machinery out there  especially from Asia

Do your suppliers have a specification that they need to adhere to?  Can you address it that way?

Is the amount of string, hair, etc above their specifications?

Setanta, the "voetstoots" clause means they are buying "as is".  But it does sound like the amount of hair and string should be looked at.

Dr. Vu, I am not able to help you on this issue, but it is an interesting one and will have to do some research, if only because it is interesting.

I'm going to try and use voetstoots as many times as I can tomorrow!

New one on me, but a good one to know!

Somehow these methods seem like hard ones to validate as effective. I looked around,

Magenta may be on the right course with the balloon idea, static electricity can be generated by latex gloves as well (especially effective when gloves are mildly damp). Or perhaps some type of magnetic attraction...

Is washing them an option?

They also have static bars, which are designed to remove static electricity, but maybe could be purposed?  I don't know enough about static electricity

Yes, fans are very effective in removing hair, broken leaves and strings etc from such supplies. At times the problem is with long hair/strings which otherwise get easily soptted during the process and can be removed manually by the process monitor.

I am not sure what the process for cashews is beyond their hulls being/containing toxic chemicals but in our plant for walnut processing we use cascade air separators for shell extraction purposes but it's worth looking into to see if a lower power one would possibly work for your facility for hair / string removal. Beyond that manual sorting is always a good step for removal of awkward foreign materials but it's only as good as your people and even then some things can sneak by, especially when it comes to hair / string.

The cashews are already shelled.. and come from a 'supplier'
