7.9 - Product Contact Materials in Traceability

Best Answer , 30 June 2015 - 04:26 PM

Psbyrd71, and the answer would be yes.  If it touches your product you will need to reference it and do mock recalls on it.  We do dry packaging, so we record bag lot codes and liner lot codes (for drums and boxes) and do mock recalls on them, maybe not every year but once every so often. Our batch sheets contain spaces to record bag or liner/drum codes

If your jar or lid manufactured called you today and said our lids/jars were exposed to "insert dangerous agent here" would you be able to pull your effected honey back?

Pontificate on that senario and you should have your answer

Hi All,

Do product contact materials, i.e. glass and lids, need to be included in the batch or lot identification for traceability? We bottle raw honey and package raw honeycomb.

7.9     Traceability system

The organization shall establish and apply a traceability system that enables the identification of product lots and their relation to batches of raw materials, processing and delivery records.

The traceability system shall be able to identify incoming material from the immediate suppliers and the initial distribution route of the end product.

Anything that goes out with your product needs to have traceability, especially any potential sources of cross contamination:  pallets, boxes, etc.

In addition to the above, if the  packaging  is not in contact with the product but contains information/labeling you need tractability.  For example if a batch of labels or outer cartons have the wrong information / misprint on it you need to be able to trace that particular batch and recall it.
