Hi,

after finding an insect inside washed vegetables (alive)  we start to review all our washing vegetable procedure.

how insects will survive all washing process ? I am aware that chlorine will not kill insects but washing vegetable vigorously , soak it in chlorine tablet for 10 minutes , rinse , using drying machine and the insect is a  alive!!

and by the way , the rocket was a packaged fresh arugula  , imported from Italy , that`s why we can`t take changing supplier as a corrective action since this is the highest quality / most expensive type of rocket leaves  in the local market.

did any one face such a thing before ? what if we use those home made pesticides as a pre- washing step to kill those insects?

is this will be efficient ?

Thanks

Ooh many years ago.  I had an issue with salad leaves, loads of aphids coming in with the product.  Through a vigorous washing process the little insects hung on and they made it into high care.  My team told me it was ok and I believed them without checking myself.  BIG MISTAKE.

Anyway, apart from the learning process that I needed to give my team an effing big kick, it taught me that the most vigorous washing process will not remove everything.  I would also say, don't change supplier, at least not yet, I would get in touch with them, tell them what you've found and ask them to resolve it.  You may need to reject the batch as well depending on the level of contamination.  Also I'd put in some additional visual checks post washing as a short term measure and charge that back to the supplier (or at least threaten to.)  Aggressive?  Yes, but people do it all the time when you're selling business to business in the UK anyway.  It's horrible but it focusses the supplier's attentions.

But anyway, why is Italian rocket so good?  You can buy it from loads of places in very good condition and flavour.  I wouldn't be scared of looking at alternatives if they don't respond well.

Thank you for your suggestions ,

our problem in Qatar that there is no choices of supplies , with limited suppliers , so basically we have no other choice

I sent an email to the source in Italy , I doubt that we might receive any feedback.

what I thunk that we need now is to adjust the washing procedure to insure that the vegetables in insect free , checking especially for Arugula is almost impossible to spot any insect there.
