Hello friends, I'm stuck on finding ways to measure food safety culture. Could you please sure your method of measuring this Currently, we are conducting weekly GMP Audits that involves the employees on the line & they are also involved with the corrective action. I have it broken down each week for each dept. then I release a score board after each audit. Secondly, we conduct a 5-10 min daily safety huddle with the team. What other ways can I measure & improve our food safety culture? Thank you all ahead of time for your input!

Good morning Bread. From your listing above:

  • 'I release a score board after each audit'
    • This is where your measurement comes in. You can measure improvement month over month. You can measure frequency of repeat findings (example, 3 people found wearing watch/fitbit/jewelry in Jan. as opposed to 1 finding in Feb. You are moving in the right direction, measure it)
  • 'we conduct a 5-10 min daily safety huddle with the team'
    • This is harder to measure, although participation and attendance could be one way to measure this. Perhaps measure the suggestions/feedback that is provided during these meetings, if you track that.

One thing I typically put in is a formal group of questions asked of random employee(s) during monthly internal inspections. I have a set of 10 or so GMP related questions that change based on current hot topic issues, and I ask 2-3 of them of 1-2 random employees. On my internal inspection I list what questions I asked, and what department I asked them of. The amount of correct answers YoY would be another way to measure long term culture improvements and GMP training retention.

Hi TimG; Would you be willing to share those GMP related questions? That would be greatly appreciated!

Sure, this is from current monthly inspection list, Ideally I rotate in hot topics as I see issues with them or to help gather data towards program validation (what to do if you see a pest infestation, should you handle the exterior bait traps, can you bring in outside chemicals or bug-sprays, etc.):

Interview a random worker and ask one of the following questions: 1)What is DGA policy on food/drink? 2)Where is the "GMP" path? 3)What is DGA policy on wearing jewelry? 4) What is DGA policy on cell phones?

20) Was the answer to the above posed question acceptable? (List question # and individual asked in notes section)

Interview a random worker and ask one of the following questions: 1)What should you do if you find broken glass in our facility? 2)When (how often) and how should you wash your hands? 3)What should you do if you suspect an un-authorized person is in the facility? 4) What should you do if you see someone doing something very unsafe that might hurt themselves or others?

21) Was the answer to the above posed question acceptable? (List question # and individual asked in notes section)

We started by having our corporate food safety team complete an assessment utilizing a food safety culture matrix. It has 11 different topics and we ranked our selves from 1-5 in each topic. Each facility plant manager then completed this assessment on their facility, and each department manager at that facility completed the assessment on their department. I wanted a baseline on how management assessed the culture. Based on these results, there are a couple overlapping 'weak points' across corporate, each facility and each department. Action items are being set on those areas at all levels. We will then reassess at the end of the year to see if there are noticeable improvements.

In addition - results from a variety of audits are reviewed, monthly, to determine any improvements/trends/repeat items. Beginning Q2 we will be adding an interview of several employees to our inspection of a sister plant. The survey (currently in development) will look at the employee's perception of food safety in the facility. I don't necessarily want to know if they are following GMP's (we do daily hygiene audits for that), I'm more interested in if they feel empowered to report FS issues, shut down a line, throw product away.
