Hi, I was reviewing supplier approval- 2.3.4.2. The approved supplier program shall be based on the past performance of a supplier and the risk level of the raw materials, ingredients, processing aids, packaging, and services supplied, and shall contain at a minimum:

I. Agreed specifications (refer to 2.3.2); ii. Reference to the level of risk applied to raw materials, ingredients, packaging, and services from the approved supplier; iii. A summary of the food safety controls implemented by the approved supplier; iv. Methods for granting approved supplier status; v. Methods and frequency of monitoring approved suppliers; vi. Details of the certificates of conformance, if required; and vii. Methods and frequency of reviewing approved supplier performance and status.

Could someone please explain what
iii. A summary of the food safety controls implemented by the approved supplier;
Does this mean what the procedure is for approving a supplier. ex. what documents are needed etc to approve a supplier. (GFSI, allergen etc). Thank you.

some companies actually have a summary of their major programs - it may include...

GMP's for employees, HACCP plan or declaration, recall, allergen, sanitation procedures, etc.

SQF had a requiremnt that facilities put one of these together, it was a bit redundant quite frankly, but that was not the first time.

These are the controls your supplier has in place to prevent/control for biological, chemical, and physical hazards.  This is why HACCP plans are typically requested during the supplier approval process.

My company has a written HACCP summary that we give out upon request, we don't give out our Hazard Analysis.  Almost all of our suppliers have a standard document they give out that describes the steps they take to prevent/control hazards.

These types of summary documents cover the major food safety programs described by Glenn.  These summary documents also typically cover the questions that are in Supplier Approval Questionnaires.

Thank you both.

I have seen these summary's- just never knew what they were called.

Normally I just request the entire HACCP Plan. Some companies provide the summary others provide the entire HACCP
