We currently meet quarterly for 3.5 hours to conduct our Management Review. I am getting requests from Top management to shorten the meeting by conducting review outside of a meeting.

(1) How often are your management review meetings?

(2) What is the length of the meetings?

(3) Have people devised a management review system where the review is conducted outside of a meeting?

Not speaking from experience, but a quarterly meeting of such length does not seem excessive; especially for discussing the health of such an important system. How is commitment generally? You could offer to hold management review meeting 3 times a year, which would reduce the meetings by a quarter, but only increase the gap between each meeting by one month.

In my previous company where I was the MR for ISO 9001, we used to have Monthly performance review of every month where all the managers made presentations in front of the top management including the managing director. After talking to the MD I included management review in the agenda once every six months. :o

The outcome used to be very interesting as we always had a healthy debate with all the 30 odd managers participitating. The monthly meeting as such used to last for about 4 hours, when we had management review as well it used to last for 6-7 hours(with snack break in between and a cocktail party after the meeting) :drunk: .

Regarding the 3rd question, I feel its not necessary to have all the inputs to the management review meeting be discussed in public, where it warrants the intervention of top management it can be discussed outside the general meeting too.

Best regards,

A Sankara Narayanan
