Is there any guidance on requirements for work space lighting?

Hello

Is there any guidance document on minimal requirements for work space lighting?
We are an industrial company producing food ingredients; what would be the approppriate lighting on truck loading areas?
Once you have defined it, is there a need of periodical control measurments?

Hello Heinz,

ISO/TS 22002-1:2009 Prerequisite programmes on food safety - Part 1: Food manufacturing prescribes lighting requirements in section 6 Lighting:

The lighting provided (natural or artificial) shall allow personnel to operate in a hygienic manner.
NOTE The intensity of the lighting should be appropriate to the nature of the operation.


So for FSSC 22000 there is no prescribed levels of lighting in terms of numbers.

I have seen requirements for levels of > 500 lux in inspection areas in the past.

SQF Edition 7 Module 11 Guidance for 11.2.5.1 states "In general, processing and food handling areas shall be illuminated to a minimum of 100 lux. Inspection areas require higher illumination and 200 lux is generally recommended".

FAO 1998 (looks like Codex also but i think not) -

minima - 540/220/110 (lux) = inspection/work/others

Seems that SQF inspectors are assumed to have excellent vision. (or vice-versa) ;)

(added) - also noticed this one -

In all rooms/areas in which fresh meat is produced, worked on or stored, light bulbs should have suitable protective covers.The following are the minimum light
intensities, which should be ensured:
Inspection points 540 lux
Work rooms and sick and suspect pens 220 lux
Storage areas and pens 110 lux

There are a number of Irish Food Safety Standards which use the following guidelines

Minimum light intensities must be:

i. Inspections points 540 Lux,

ii. Work Rooms 220 Lux,

iii. Storage areas 110 Lux.

I would say that where visual inspection is important there should be some level of monitoring.
