Anybody got an inspection protocol for waste removal vehicles? We have external waste removers and need a protocol for pest control, inspecting incoming vehicles for pest etc.

Thanks

Dear Annette Bekker,

I believe this may be a unique question.

What kind of vehicle is it ? eg an open truck ?

What kind of Waste ?

Just out of curiosity, do you do the inspection yourself ? (I still bemoan losing my spectacles when inspecting a waste treatment vat, searching was not an option  ).

Hi Charles

Thanks for your reply. In our pest control procedure there is a section on control of incoming vehicles. This include delivery vehicles, containers for shipment and waste removal vehicles. Both the delivery vehicles and containers get inspected and the protocol is included in work instructions. But there is nothing for the waste removal and currently nobody does any inspection, so no i am not doing it. We have different companies removing wet waste, plastic, boxes, glass and tin. Then we also have farmers coming in to collect fruit peels and waste for pig food. I am the internal pest control representative and have to update the procedure, which currently has a highlighted sentence after the waste removal vehicle part saying "Dont have inspection protocol in place". Not looking very good should an auditor look at it

Oh sorry about your glasses, but i have to agree, searching definitely not an option ;)

Unique indeed...  A whole slew of concerns come to mind, and like you said, all of it revolves around trying to defend it to an auditor...

  • You said farmers come in to collect fruit peels, I assume since you're asking about vehicles that they're driving their own trucks.  Seems to me a pig farmer's truck probably drove through pig crap on their farm, and probably something you wouldn't want around you production area at all.  Auditor might want to see a program to clean a farmer's vehicle, but then any cleaning would need a validation test...
  • Trash vehicles are carrying trash by their very nature.  They could've stopped at a facility before you that had all sorts of cross contamination and micro concerns.

I'm no expert, but I would have a very hard time trying to debate an auditor when it comes to letting any outside vehicle into my facility, let alone ones that are a potential microhazard on wheels.  Is there any possibility to remove the waste from the facility internally?  Or at least moving it to an area where the vehicles stage outside a door and don't actually enter?

If these vehicles are only outside on the common driveway, is an inspection necessary? We do not inspect our waste removal, as they just drive in and empty the dumpsters, which are located away from the building.

Dear Anneke Bekker,

My first thought was to, err, modify the procedure if within yr jurisdiction. S.African standard?

IMEX, waste collection where some relatively close-up access is unavoidable is (quietly/invisibly) done after production for the day via a segregated route so “Nil” process and minimised environmental interaction. This could maybe auditorially excuse (risk-based  )  yr direct inspection or confine it to an external appraisal only, eg wheels, dripping unmentionables as per previous comment (must admit that on one rare occasion our Security self-rejected a truck on the latter criterion, didn't happen again  ). But this depends on yr specific product / factory layout / standard. I did (briefly) imply maintaining the pick-up area to its usual pristine condition in my SSOPs.

I would argue that the overall (process) control involved defines that the quality of my waste was no different to the product / area within which it was generated, ie  waste = acceptable by-product.

This OP potentially overlaps into a previous interesting thread involving responsibility for the quality of the waste. A rather different but equally multi-faceted question.
