hi

We are having ozonizer in auto vegetable washing tank as sanitizer at receiving level. Using 50ppm of it. but i want to know how to measure this 50ppm of ozonizer in the wash tank.

and also want to know how it will work, principles of this sanitizer, and where else i can use this sanitizer? on meat products, can i?

Have a plan to install ozonizer in meat fabricating room as internal air purifier, is there any specification for these use?

I am in hotel industry.

Thanks in advance.

According to my knowledge ozone analyzers and Ozone Amperometric sensor are available to check ozone content of water you can use them. Even there are Hach Chemical Co. procedures for ozone determination.

Thanks and regards,

Hello Anju,

What do you mean by 50 ppm ozone. Is it machine generating ozone /hr .Ozone is normally checked in < 1-2ppm in water.

DPD tablets are available for testing of ozone in water.

it is used in bottled drinking water at .2 to .4 ppm.

For vegetables and fruits rinsing in ozonated water you have to validate your process for log reduction of pathogens at what ppm of ozone in rinsed water.i.e.

Length of Product Exposure Minimum  seconds contact time with all surfaces .

Ozone Concentration in Water – Minimum (1-2ppm) ppm aqueous ozone concentration at points of application.

Still research is going on for use on Veg, fruits and other products..

Normally chlorine is used at 200ppm for fresh fruits and vegetables. Since ozone gives only 1-2 logs reduction of pathogens.

you can use ozone for fresh meat products but it is degraded by organic matter hence not very useful.

However you can use in meat storage rooms (Air Sterilization----0.1 to 0.2 ppm).

Ozone working principle-

Ozone is triatomic oxygen. 3O2---->  2O3 + heat & light

                                                   <-----

Ozone formed by reacting oxygen(O2) in air with oxygen atom(O) by sparking (corona discharge) in machine to form ozone (like ozone formed in air during lightning).

Ozone kills microbes by oxidation of their cell membranes and gets converted back to oxygen,

While ozone is very powerful oxidising agent, it has a very short life cycle.

The three atom form of oxygen is a naturally occurring compound in the earth's atmosphere.

The life cycle of ozone is: generation, oxidation, return to oxygen.

Ozone cannot be stored or transported because of its unstable tendency to break down quickly, so ozone must be generated on site.

Is Ozone harmful  ?

Yes, when used properly, like anything else, ozone is safe. There is no reason to fear ozone. Yes, breathing in overly high levels of ozone is not good for humans.  But low levels of ozone are all around us, and are safe to breathe. ozone has a characteristic smell.

Ozone is basically self limiting. When the ozone level reaches to high a level it begins to irritate sinus passages, give you a sore throat, and possibly even a headache.
