We are a medium size bakery , every summer we have problems with food flies. they are just everywhere in production. we clean our drains regularly and all other points in facility too are cleaned at definite frequency. But still we are unable to control them? Can anyone suggest any chemical which can be used for controlling flies?

Do you have a pest control company you contract with?

They do have pheromone traps that you can use to attract and then trap flying insects with.  That's one control measure that can help.

We do have a pest control guy coming every month , and have electric light traps for flies but that doesnot control flies. they increase a lot during summers .sp I thought to use some chemical procedure .

How are they getting in?

Is the building proofed against flies and are doors and windows kept closed?

Prevention is better than cure.

the building is old so there are lot of hiding spots for flies , whenever we use any chemical either its not effective or flies change their location.

Only phyrethroids are allowed to be used inside processing area (sprayed after work hour). You also can put some glue traps. Electric fly killer is not recommended as dead flies may fall into your product. As Simon said preventive measure is much better than cure

If you already have pest control and it is not effective....perhaps you need a second opinion.

Yeah, I wouldn't jump to chemicals indoors for house flies.

edit - rereading the OP lookes like maybe they are fruit flies

Don't ever leave a door open.  Clean out your drians, clean off your trash cans, clean up anything sticky or rotting.  Watch where the flies move to and then clean out the area.  Eventually the place will be sparkling :).  Try emptying the trash more often, cleaning out the bins themselves if something sticky as dropped between the liner and the bin.

If trash/debris are stored outside near entrances I would move them.    If you have standing water right outside a doorway,  you shoudl remove it.  I've had pest control companies do an outside spray of the grounds for flying inscetcs periodically, but we also had wasps & mosquitos, so this helped knock down the bite and sting complaints.  Pyrethoids will kill adults but not eggs if they are hiding.  Air curtains on doors are more expensive than closing the door, but if you have dock doors that stay open for long periods of time they're a good investment.

As Snookie emphasized, if your current pest control provider isn't taking an interest in your problem, use your purcahsing power to go to a company that will.  Pest control *should* be recommending these things, and you're overpaying them if you see contamination issues.

It really needs to be a two pronged approach.  Get the ones in the building dead and then prevent any more from coming in.   I have seen the blowers that come on in doors open be effective in some situations.  But it sounds like their current pest control is not fixing or knows how to fix and prevent it.  So perhaps another expert or fresh pair of eyes.

Hello,

Pheromones trap are highly effective and safer than poisons. I use them in my company and I am very satisfy. However, its a bit costly to maintain- you need to change glue traps more often and the latter are expensive.

I too work for a bakery in the southern US and feel your pain.  We have light traps with glue boards, air curtains at all entrances, and our PCO puts out fly bait around the outside of the building weekly in warmer months.  Whenever we have a day with no production or even a few hours, we turn off all of the lights in the building.  All the flying insects go to the lights and get stuck on the glue boards.  We have strip curtains over entrances to production areas as well.  Even with all of these measures in place we still get our share.  I agree with cleaning anywhere you see a lot of them.  Last year, we had tons in one area.  Kept digging and found a really gross area under some equipment that was missed in cleaning.  We were breeding them inside instead of them comming from outside!!  Yuck!

Lights with glue boards are an excellent idea and cleaning everything is a key as well as monitoring and using pheremones, but you also need to do a drain pm. A very cheap an excellent food safe drain pm is vinegar and baking soda with salt followed by super hot water done on a daily basis. There are also excellent microbial food safe drain cleaners to use. One I can highly recommend is Biodrain. We used it in our plant along with the above and it took care of our pest problem. Also, I would find a better Pest Control company if they don't want to help you. If you have any questions, please email me, if I can help you I will!

Add a cup of vegetable oil to the drain after cleaning.  It creats a barrier to the water so the insects cant get to it.  This works great.
