The 2015 version of ISO 9001 will be published next year and I have seen the Draft and interpretation document written by CQI/Ideagen. Of the changes the most significant are the ones related to “Senior Management Commitment”.

5 Leadership
5.1 Leadership and commitment
5.1.1 Leadership and commitment to the quality management system

In DIS 9001:2014 replaces “Management responsibility” with “Leadership”, and repositions a number of ISO 9001:2008 requirements as leadership activities and (importantly) some which cannot be delegated.  Broadly this section requires senior management to:

• Take accountability for the effectiveness of their organisation’s QMS

• Ensure the quality policy and quality objectives are consistent with the organisation’s overall strategic direction

• Work alongside their people in order to ensure that the quality objectives are achieved.

• Ensure that the quality policy is communicated, understood and applied across the organisation.

• Ensure QMS requirements are integral to the organisation’s business processes – and not a “bolt on”.

• Promote awareness and the adoption of the “process approach”

• Ensure resources required for the effective operation of the QMS are made available.

• Stress the importance of effective quality management and of conforming to the requirements of the QMS

• Make sure that the QMS is achieving the results intended and must lead people to contribute to the effective operation of the system.

• Drive continual improvement and innovation, and develop leadership in their managers.

There are also changes in sections:

5.1.2 Customer focus

5.2 Quality policy

5.3 Organizational roles, responsibilities and authorities

Demonstrating senior management commitment is no longer as simple as paying for a quality department and reluctantly sitting in an annual management review meeting playing with blackberry; many of the new requirements cannot be delegated and will be audited.  Senior management is expected to have a ‘hands on’ approach....and LEAD the QMS.

I think this is an important change and no doubt Food Safety Management Systems standards will follow in the coming years.

It very much depends on starting point of organisation how much of a change this means to you.

Broadly this section requires senior management to:

• Work alongside their people

:roflmao:

I agree that this is the most important thing to understanding the value of management involved quality, and I think it's an admirable goal.  My factory President tours the place monthly now, but

I find this usually happens once at every factory and then is factory legend until there is new senior management.

Here are a couple of mine -

  • CEO goes on a tour of the factory, visiting my (normally) locked sanitation cage.  He calls me in after the tour to tell me the cage was unsecured, with the door open, key in the lock, hanging. He had locked the cage back up, gives me the key, and lets me know this is a serious danger to employees and a breach of the food defense program (in CEO words).  I agree.  As we are talking, my supervisor phone rings, and it is the employee responsible for locking the cage.  I answer to ask him to meet me there to unlock the cage and inventory the chemicals, furious. My CEO hears this:  Me: "You're WHERE?"  <silence> Me:"I have to go.  Employee X is locked in the sanitation cage and I have the keys."

  • CEO goes on tour in the factory and turns it into a media blitz, cleaning out one of the orange juice tankers in PPE with the sanitation crew around him taking pictures, which were then promptly displayed on the wall.  Afterwards, they cleaned out the tanker to proper hygiene standards. The only other time I saw the CEO, the had brought in the morning news team to our high hygiene bottling/fill area and proceeded to allow the camera crew, reporter, and everyone associated to disregard all PPE and GMP requirements live on-air.  This is actually available on youtube from the news channel are part of their weather segment archive.

Dear magenta_m,

How true.  But at least yr CEO didn't bring their poodle with them. :happydance:

And as for the "Process Approach", i still get nightmares involving millions of cute little PDCA circles rolling over me !

Nonetheless, in the spirit of the OP, the introduction of "Leadership" does add an increased flavour of intent. But how much of the change will simply be a cosmetic re-packaging ?

Has the ISO 9001 Standard retained the position of  Management Representative ? i often wondered if this was the inspiration behind SQF's "Practitioner" ?

I fear the reality is that already  "good" companies can genuinely benefit from the Standard, for many others  it's just a piece of paper. My 2 cents.

Kind Regards,

Same happened at a new facility where I developed new products for and commissioned. The marketing department claimed it to be a 'major food factory working to the "highest" European standards'

The CEO decided standards didn't apply for a 'big wig' visit/opening ceremony - The evidence is also on youtube

I left before said event, I am one for voting with my feet ;)

ISO are selling the draft version of ISO/DIS 9001 - Surprised they haven't started selling toilet paper with ISO stamped on it for 50 bucks a go! ... watch this space.
