hello all! I have a need that I have been searching in the web and with colleagues, with no specific answer, so… here it is: does anybody has a base questionnaire to do when a new employee start working, regarding specific questions on food defense? Of course, it will depend on each country, because laws on employment and personnel issues vary country to country, but it would be great if anyone could share something related….tks in advanced!!

Is this to screen someone before you hire them to see if they are a food defense risk, or do you want to hire people with food defense knowledge?

Very few people even know what food defense is, unless they have worked at a food facility before.

You could ask some food defense questions at their interview.

I'm not sure what the OP's intent is.

Are your looking for pre-employment questions that will somehow determine if a person is a risk to the food supply?

"Are you now or have you ever been a member of a group of people who have planned to or attempted to or successfully adulterated food or food products?"

Or are you asking baseline questions about a persons knowledge about "food defense". As Martha says, I doubt your average person would even have the slightest clue what "food defense" is.

"Are you now or have you ever been a member of a group of people who have planned to or attempted to or successfully adulterated food or food products?"

That would be a fun question to ask, Marshall.  And if you have to explain "adulterated",  you know they are not familiar with food safety in the US!

But on a serious note, the OP needs to clarify what she is looking for.

Thanks all!

My question is when hiring new personnel, NOT the competence on food defense, but the POTENTIAL of that unknown person of intentionally adulterate the product.

Of course, not direct questions, but I thought may be there are some key questions to ask, and guide HHRR people to seek deeply on one specific profile.

Best regards,

Leila

Hi Leila Burin,

As i understand, you wish to develop an employee question form  for Risk Assessment for "Food Threat Potential"

So what are the possible hazards ? i suspect this will involve an expansion of HACCP into the Psychological arena ?

The usual basic problem for such forms, eg Health, is that interviewees simply lie to be consistent with the (invariably) obvious preferred answer.

However I recall the Food Panel gurus  have some semantic tricks whereby a group of seemingly unrelated questions can be evaluated to yield conclusions regarding  much deeper quality issues.

Presumably tests for factors such as  Lying / Evasion / Deception / Mis-speakings will be involved.

TBH, I almost guarantee that analogous questionnaires to that which you seek already exist but whether available in the Public Domain is another matter.

Kind Regards,

Charles.C

The best way to weed out potential "bad people" is to use their past behavior as your guide to predicting their future actions.  That can be done through 2 methods:

1. Check their criminal background.

2. Ask for at least 3 references, 2 professional and 1 character.  CHECK THEM ALL OUT!  If any are fake, you know the person cannot be trusted.  If they can only give you 2, it may be due to their inexperience, but everyone should be able to give a personal reference.

Checking references is one of the most often skipped steps, but it can be very important.

Psychological tests to predict their criminal capabilities are perilous, and could be inaccurate.  They require someone with some expertise to analyze them.  I'd stay away from them unless you have a staff psychologist.

That's interesting, because in the US, the activities of the courts is a matter of public record.  We got a lot worried about secret courts during the Revolution.  We are only allowed to use the record of convictions when considering people for employment, but if you were convicted, it can follow you around forever.

Best of luck.

Not sure if the above is quite the same activity.

I always put "References available on Request".

This aspect has analogies to previous threads here on disclosure of medical information. Another potential minefield.

As A psychological comment, how many times when faced with several candidates having similar qualifications do you make a decision based on "intangibles"?

It definitely is.  Now, in this era of the Internet and courts having their records available online, you can see when people have been sued, when there has been a protective order against them, when they appeared in court even for to a traffic ticket, and when they were convicted of a crime.  All without leaving your computer, it's online now.  The history of court appearances is available, even if they were acquitted.

Some states may not have gone totally online, but they will soon.  And these records were always available if you wanted to go down to the courthouse and request it yourself.

The only records that are not available are for juveniles, which do not appear online.

We live in a fishbowl here.

To add to that, if you don't want people to see this history, and if you were not convicted, you have to petition the court to expunge it, to make it unavailable to others.  Even then, you have to wait for a period of time (3 years in MD) before you can petition, and it takes several months for the process to complete.

Hi Martha,

I meant the same activity as carried out in Spain.
