Hi,

I need a little help, We have a discussion going on back and forth here about site security. I cant find anywhere in the standard (SQF Level 2) that says if we have screens on our bay doors that we cant have them open because of security risks.

We aren't in a controlled environment on our production floor, so it can get rather hot. We use the flow of air through the bay doors to cool the facility down. But have the screens to eliminate any pests or FM entering the floor.

Was just looking to see if anyone has run into this problem. We haven't had a facility audit yet (its coming in June). I also don't want any of my employees to pass out from heat exhaustion. We do supply water and ice for extremely hot days.

Thanks In Advance

Loni

Thanks,

Loni

Hi Loni,

And if you don't mind, please allow me to be the first person on this forum to hit on you. I sincerely hope you don't think I am being disrespectful to you, I assure you I will be doing this in an ultra professional manner;

Firstly, I notice you have very lovely glasses. They beautifully compliment your face.

Secondly, what is the risk rating of your facility? I know, it's not such a beautiful question, not as beautiful as your brunette hair. Is it a high risk facility? If so, yes, you may have to keep the doors closed. Is it a low care facility? Then what? Do you allow staff in wearing shorts? With their hairy, sweaty legs posing a foreign body hazard? (not your legs, I imagine your legs are resplendent with radiant beauty). If you are keeping doors open, do you have a secondary ring of security at, for example, security cameras on the site boundary, security personnel at the gate?

I know it is difficult to to imagine, but I would hate for someone to break your site security protocols as easily as it would be for you to break my heart if you don't PM me. I am here for you.

Sincerely, Shea

Lori -

Have your managment team perform a risk assessment from the standpoint of food safety and food defense.  Are the doors only open during certain hours?  Are they visible or monitored such that if someone entered through them they would be detected quickly?  How significant is the human safety risk if you don't have them open?  Have you considered any additional security devices around that area to releive any concerns that are raised (i.e. additional fence on the outside, additional cameras, etc.)?

If you are able to show your auditor a thorough risk assessment to justify why you leave them open, that helps the discussion significantly.  I agree with you that there is no specific language addressing this issue - which is why your risk assessment is so important.

At my plant we have the same screen doors, but we only allow them to be open during the hours there are employees active in the warehouse, so if a "bad guy" entered the plant we would know it.

Good luck.

I was thinking just the same, but getting management involved is like pulling teeth lol I know you all feel me on that one. I would say that these doors would be open 24 hrs a day 6 days a week during the warmer months (June-September). The doors are located at the front of our facility which the view of them is partially obscured by storage of finished goods.  However I feel it could be possibly low risk we are located physically in a "county" area low traffic. and set far back from the road. I am going to start my risk assessment today.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks,

Loni

Are there alarms or sensors on the doors that if they were disturbed, someone might be notified?  What is done during bad/rainy weather?

I laugh every time I read that post from Shea! lol its hilarious and clever.

and update on my security issues though. We now have screens on all doors that are to be left open. Doors that will be open on 2nd and 3rd shift are in view of being monitored from all sides of the floor. Doors not visible are locked and you need a code to enter. I am hoping that the min I drive away they don't go open the bay doors. I am probably going to have to start doing pop ins.

Thanks,

Loni

As I read Shea's post, I was laughing loud enough to make my coworkers wonder if I was actually working.  :oops2:

Glad to hear you guys were able to resolve this issue; I will keep it in mind as it is our company's first summer in our new building so we don't know what it's like here. Screen doors for bay doors...that's awesome.

Aaaannnddd, you're probably right to do pop ins all ninja-like from time to time. :ninja:  If it gets too hot, it will be highly tempting for off shifts to open those unobserved doors with the reasoning that you guys are so far away from the road that nobody is likely to come in. Good luck with that!!

We have these screened doors on one of our docks as well and I have noticed that while the mesh is small enough to not allow pest to come through, they do crawl on the outside of the screen then fly into the facility when we open the door. May need to add a air curtain.
