Hi all,

I searched under labeling but I don't see any topics regarding my particular query, so I shall ask now.

We're starting to see the first of customers requiring updated nutritional facts and so forth due to the final ruling from the FDA regarding the facts panel changes.

My first question is regarding the recommended daily intakes and reference values. Apparently several items are getting revised values (including dietary fiber, sodium, and Vit D). However, I am not finding what these revised values will be. Anyone have a link to this?

My second question is how to address added sugars. It's my understanding that added sugars are basically the sugars added during the process and are not naturally occurring to the product. In that instance, many processed foods will only contain added sugars, or will contain mostly added sugars. How do you determine the % Daily Value for this?

Lastly, will there be simplified versions of the label? I work in the sweetener industry and many of our products are not nutrient intensive and currently qualify for the simplified label. I don't know if that will be allowed with this new ruling.

Thanks,

QAGB

Hi,

The FDA held a webinar on Monday June 27.  The PowerPoint presentation is available for download now.  The presentation will be available, but has not been posted yet.

The presentation is now available on the FDA website. It was somewhat informative, although very vague in many ways. A number of questions during the Q&A session were left unanswered.

A number of items do not yet have guidance documents, and although they have made a final ruling on the changes, they're not exactly ready with many things discussed in the presentation.

I've written them in hopes of some clearer answers, but at least the presentation clears up my first question I posed about daily values and so forth. I was hoping to get a good start on changing the nutritional panels for all of our products (which will be a headache for the next two years), but the lack of clarity is a major deterrent at this point. Hopefully more guidance information will come out soon.

HI GAGB

Let's try this link maybe you can get answer here

http://www.fda.gov/F...cm385663.htm#QA

From below paragraph may answer your 2nd question

4. How does the FDA define “added sugars”?

The definition of added sugars includes sugars that are either added during the processing of foods, or are packaged as such, and include sugars (free, mono- and disaccharides), sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices that are in excess of what would be expected from the same volume of 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice of the same type. The definition excludes fruit or vegetable juice concentrated from 100 percent fruit juice that is sold to consumers (e.g. frozen 100 percent fruit juice concentrate) as well as some sugars found in fruit and vegetable juices, jellies, jams, preserves, and fruit spreads.

Moreover I still find new reference of new daily value, if you have any link please kindly share

Thanks!

Hi QAGB,

I also found that FDA changed Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACC) or Serving size, from 2 oz to 3 oz (for canned tuna). All containers with < 200% of RACC must be labeled as a single serving. Containers with > 200 and < 300% of the RACC will be required to bear a second column of nutrition information "per container".

Any idea what about containers with more than 300% of the RACC, such as 63 oz?. I have been trying to find out the regulation about this but not found yet

Regards

Dharmadi
