Hello all,  I am in need of some expert advise.  We are a company with a SQF Level 2 Certification, who re-packs food items.  There are NO exposed food products at our facility.  Recently, we have been contacted to warehouse/store a company's bulk, unpackaged dog chews (pig ears, chew sticks), and fulfill orders from our facility as they are received.  What I want to know is if this type of product would jeopardize our SQF certification, and if we would need further certification in order to do so.  We do not want to risk losing our SQF Certification.  Thank you in advance for all expertise, comments, and advice.

Animal food , especially dog food, typically has requirements equal or even more stringent than human food however I am not sure how this could impact your certification.
The best you can do is send the question to your CB and they will give you the best advice and which category this might fit in it might #26 or maybe not - I am not sure

Hi s.sirek,

I presume the chews are RTE and previously heat treated.

I also assume the chews are included within yr "no exposed product" statement.

The obvious potential risk is microbial product cross-contamination.

You might consider doing yr own risk assessment. Yr process not known but i would be rather cautious in declaring zero risk of exposed product. This would also imply "zero" risk from the hazard . Accidents never happen ?

I used to get a similar problem but more so when auditing frozen cold stores where seafood was stored adjacent to raw chicken. No thank you.

Kind Regards,

This would only jeopardize your SQF Certification if you were to fail to contact your CB and inform them that you need to add the appropriate FSC and then go about ensuring that you have fulfilled the requirements of the applicable module and also how your new dog chew line impacts your existing products that you re-pack. An SQF consultant could help you out with this or you could contact your CB and inquire as to next steps.

You may need to have an SQF Auditor come in to re-cert the facility again.

Sorry but  FSC =  food safety clause ? food safety certificate ?

In traditional HACCP language i would classify this query as relating to the necessity (or not) for "revalidation" of the HACCP plan. Hence "risk assessment". I expect that the SQF Standard / related module includes or implies this contingency somewhere.

Evening Charles,

FSC = Food Sector Category.

There are about 35 or so FSC's for SQF with each one matching up with the appropriate modules.

Some companies have just 1 FSC while others may have more.

All companies must meet requirements for module 2, and have a secondary module that is #11 -- however, it is the FSC that dictates what the secondary module is.

Sorry for the long explanation - more than needed.
