Line Clearance procedure during maintenance works

Hi,

I work in a printers making labels etc for the food and drink industry. I need to write a procedure for line clearance during maintenance works. Can anyone give me a starter for 10 please?

hello Ali,

I will introduce you the way that we document the line clearance at our System.

We have a general GMP guidance for the production staff where among other mentioned that after a maintenance work, all the working tools, swarf and other contamination hazards should removed and the equipment should cleaned. Furthermore we have a column "line clearance" at our maintenace register, where the operator declare that the the line is cleared. After that the production manager check and sign to resume production.

This is our procedure and till now we have not faced any conformance problem with the inspectors.

I'm guessing you have just had your BRC and got caught out by the tweak in wording for Issue 5 on maintenance.

There should be no need to write a complete procedure for clearance following maintenance, a couple of paragraphs in a general maintenance procedure should suffice.

The thing to remember that the clause requires a record in addition to the procedure and this is where it can get tricky. Maintenance mostly comes in three types: 

1. Work done by contractors
2. Planned maintenance work by your own staff
3. Emergency/breakdown repaired by either tour own staff or contractors.

You will need to capture clearance after each of these types.Planned work by contractors or your own staff will normally involve a line shutdown of some level. You may have a line start up record that you can modify to record the clearance. Alternatively I have seen rubber stamps being used with a signature on paperwork with a suitable phrase such as " equipment checked and is free from materials and is safe and clean to use" The procedure should define who can give this authority.

Hi, I have a huge issue with line clearance and responsibility. To satisfy BRC requirements, there are work orders made for every job. I added clearance sign off and verification onto my work order form. 

This has satisfied my BRC auditor.

attached is my work order form.

My SOP states that all work performed will have a work order and describes the steps of clearing on the work order.

The Contractor's work and Preventative Maintenance clearance procedures are verified by the Company representative which documents on the log/invoice itself. 

Keep in mind, training is key and you should review their documents if possible, annually or monthly.
