Compressed Air System Risk Assessment: Do I need to Test?

Taking place:

Friday, July 14, 2017 - 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM UK Time

This is a 10.00 AM Eastern US Start

Presenter:

Ruby Ochoa, President/Owner, Trace Analytics LLC

Webinar Overview:

More than 70% of production facilities use compressed air in the manufacturing process. Experts like the Compressed Air & Gas Institute (CAGI) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) agree that the primary contaminants to monitor are particles, water, and oil (PWO). The primary sources of contamination in a compressed air supply include the intake air quality and the compressor itself. Other significant sources include distribution piping, storage receivers, and point-of-use items such as valves, gauges, flexible tubing, and fittings. Does your system filter these contaminants out? Where does your compressed air system add additional contaminants that need to be monitored or filtered? Are these contaminants detrimental to your product? Where are your HACCP critical control points, and are you monitoring them?

Dan : Good morning to all from central California
Colleen : Thanks Torrey I know that, but what elements of. Ontamination should we be looking at?
Colleen : Contamination
Torrey : SQF 13.5.4.2 Compressed air used in the manufacturing process shall be regularly monitored for purity.â€
SENTHIL : What is the ISO standard for Compressed air quality?
Colleen : How often is regular? If regulation does not state.
farhat : what are audit compliance elements for compressed air risk assessment
Renu Agrawal : Is it compulsory to have micron filter at all  user point
Brian : Colleen - depends upon your risk assessment
NEDA : hi, I can't download the previous webinars
Simon Timperley : If the packaging is direct food contact and there is a risk that compressed air can come into contact with product or product surfaces Ii think the contaminants we are discussing here
Torrey : Senthil: ISO does not set standards. Both FDA and SQF recommend taking a Risk Assessment/Hazard Analysis to determine possible specs for your product. I think she stated she will get to this later in the presentation...
Simon Timperley : Neda contatc team@ifsqn.com
Liz : filters are put in our compressed air lines.  what size filter would be suitable to contain these type of contamination
NEDA : ok, thanks Simon

Simon Timperley : Ha ha Chris
Colleen : Yes quality limits not established
Jane : Nigeria
mariya : iran
Torrey : Monika: Ruby (Trace Analytics) said they can supply a sample risk assessment as well as a blank one.
paul : I beleive we use 0.5 microns
Andre Kutassy : WHO ANSWERED BRAZIL, COULD PLS SAY NUMBER OF THE  RDC, PLEASE
Renu Agrawal : What should be replacement frequency for 0.2 micron filter at user point
Adriana Rodriguez : Sorry I can not see the video
Kelly Tang : What is the common class for analytical lab equipment?
Sara : We use Nitrogen to open plastic pouches that we fill with juice after. We also use Nitrogen to push juice left in the pipeline on transfer between tanks
Liz : Is there a definition of the purity classes ?
Ronald : How is the correct way to do microbiological analysis in compressed air?
Elizabeth : Gotcha, Sara. Makes sense now.
Andre Kutassy : WE USE 1:2:1 FOR FOOD CONTACT AND 1:4:1  FOR INDIRECT FOOD CONTACT ( EXAMPLE : PACKAGING AIR BLOW)
Bernardo F. Isiderio Jr : how safe is sterile filter use in aseptic process
guru : what will be filter size for food industry?
Lilian : We use compressed air to blow bottles for food industry
Liz : How can we determine the amount of contaminants in a compressed air sample?  How can we get a sample of compressed air?
Lilian : I do not know an Anvisa regulation for this, there
Brian : Is anyone else having to reconnect/refresh multiple times, because the feed keeps pausing or locking up?
Torrey : Liz: purity classes = Purity classes designate limits for each contaminant. As classes increase from 1 to 7, limits become less stringent.
Chi Samuel : Good day Samuel from Cameroon
Lilian : I do not know an Anvisa regulation for this in Brazil
Torrey : Liz: Trace Analytics does this type of testing
Colleen : Twice per year'
Colleen : Thank you for links!
mitch buckley : Yes, from T.A
Sherri : yes, for micro
Monika : We test our compressed air by blowing the air on to an open pertidish  with appropriate media ( provided by a third party laboratory) for about 2 minutes. The petri is safely closed after 2 minutes, packed and sent to the lab for testing yeast and mold as we are a bakery.
Margaret : We have two people viewing this class. Can we get two certificates?
James : We test for yeast and mold
Joseph : Yes, for micro
Andre Kutassy : ANA CAROLINA DO YOU KNOW WHICH RDC IN BRAZIL?
Renu Agrawal : Yes we monitor
Simon Timperley : Yes Margaret as you add your own names to the certificate
Colleen : How to asses the risk= testing
Torrey : Monika: Is that micro testing an ISO method?
Don : yes - non iso
guru : yes for micro
paula : no we are not currently testing
Colleen : Check list please!
Chillida : Hi every body i'm laie today
Brian : Colleen - all documentation relating to this presentation will be sent out via email later
michele : Is Air Quality testing / petri dish method suitable? In my opinion i feel that it would not be acceptable.
Mohammed El Wakeel : Mariam link invalid
Monika : YES - Non ISO 8573 Standard
Torrey : I agree Michele
Torrey : Thank you Monika
Renu Agrawal : ISO 8573 define how to monitor micro
Monika : Torrey :  We are not ISO certified. We do it for BRC.
paula : we are only using compressed air for removing debris from equipment before equipment & entire Processing area is sanitized between Processing shifts. Should it be tested if sanitation procedures are performed after using?
Torrey : Michele: I think it is suitable if you use an impaction microbial sampler. I believe that is what ISO recommends.
Renu Agrawal : Agree With Torrey
Torrey : Monika: Do you use BCAS as a reference for setting your standards for particles, water, and oil? Indirect vs direct use specs?
Susan : Why does Pizza and Bread have a different water class?
sylvester : what catrgory does cocoa powder falls in your list
Jenny Chan : anyone from sugar refinery here?
Kondylia : No
Renu Agrawal : How frequently we should replace 0.2 micron filter at user point
michele : thanks Torrey
Monika : Torrey- not really !  After this seminar we might consider doing that :)
Colleen : Please help with using comressed air to move paper cups through a plastic tunnel from A-B
Torrey : Sylvester and Susan: I think these are short list of exampled and we would want to define our specs based on a risk assessment.
Liz : how would you determine if the 0.2 micron filter is effective/non effective?
Anne Marie : Anyone here in manufacturing flavor ingredients?
Renu Agrawal : Liz : monthly we do air micro sampling
Stephen : Liz you would determine the performance with a bubble point test or water diffusion test
Colleen : Ok so air from the tunnels needs to be tested?
Liz : Im not familar with the bubble point test /water diffusion test
Torrey : Liz: you could test before and after installation. Also, refer to your vendor as to their maintenance plan for replacement, and cross check it with compressed air testing samples to see how often you should be replacing filters (possibly dependent on your system and results of the risk assessment)
Monika : Renu - How do you sample compressed air for micor sampling?
Nikki : Liz - you can also look at the ISO 8573 chart - which purity classes align with your filter's limits? then test according to that ISO class. Passing that test will tell you that your filters are working properly.
Stephen : Liz, if it is membrane based 0.2um then the manufacturer publishes data for the BP and diffusion.  measure it using a unit such as the one from Flow Test GmbH designed for usin the food and bev industry
Torrey : Nikki: thank you! great suggestion.
Renu Agrawal : Through impaction air sampler
Monika : Renu - Thank you
Liz : Stephen- do you have more information on the Flow Test GmbH?
Monika : Renu - What kind of microbes do you test for the compressed air sample?
Liz : we are using the 0.2 micron filter, now to prove why we are using this as predecessor had implemented this
Renu Agrawal : Bacteria, fungi
Monika : Any specific bacteria? or overall count?
Stella : I'm in CA, which lab should I use for the air testing?
Stephen : Liz, Filter Integrity Ltd in the UK market and support this, contact them using their website for more info.
Liz : we use compress air both on RTE and raw side, so different testing parameters
Renu Agrawal : Overall count but we characterized by gram stain
Torrey : Stella: Trace Analytics does testing globally. They are based in TX
Jessica : thank you!
Renu Agrawal : Colony morphology plus gram stain
