UKAS ACCREDITED CERTIFICATION

As the Administrator of this international forum, I believe it is to everyone's interest to know why ISO 22000 was released in such a haste (Sept. 2005) and just when you thought it was all honky dory when the UKAS Certification Pilot Scheme was announced.......then every thing seemed to have gone very wrong!

Since the announcement of the Pilot Scheme (together with the Witness Audit Carried Out), Companies who have achieved "unaccredited certification" are still waiting for their "accredited certification" which was supposed to have been completed by end-March.

Whatever happened, it sure does not give ISO or UKAS a good image here.

Firstly, ISO had not responded to making any statements to clarify the current ambiguous situation (talking about ISO 9001 ) and on why the specific AB has not yet finalised the pilot scheme results

Secondly, UKAS had not responded to releasing the approved list of accredited CBs to-date on a progressive basis which would have allowed the CBs that had qualified the witness audit to start their accredited certification for their respective clients.

And, to make matters worse, some CBs (I need to verify this) are already promoting accredited certification for ISO 22000.

Looks like the Gibbs Principle of PCDCA needs to apply here

Charles as the Administrator of this international forum it is my duty to ask my contact at UKAS if he can provide us with an update. It's easter weekend so I imagine it will be at least a couple of weeks before we get a response, but we should get one.

As far as I can tell the big CB's who have been given a comfortable ride by UKAS have been allocated new auditors for the food safety who have implemented the rules correctly, as a result so called "qualified" auditors have been found wanting and the CB's have been unable to close out issues raised.

The second problem has been for smaller CB's who do not carry out consultancy that it is very difficult to find clients to be witnessed by UKAS. Many companies want ISO22000 but don't want to have UKAS visit and so they wait until some other company is witnessed and then get the CB to visit.

I'll lay out a challenge that any hotel/resturant who wants ISO22000 certification contacts me I'll sort out a UKAS witness to get us the accreditation by the end of the Summer.

It's not just the fault of the CB's and UKAS/ISO. The consultants must take some of the blame, we had 2 clients ready for UKAS witness, everything was arranged for the end of April but both clients had serious problems and we felt it was unfair on the companies to continue the audits with UKAS witness as they would have recieved a very long list of NC's and no certification.
The Consultant for this company did not even understand HACCP principles

Until effective training and competent consultancies become more commonplace then there is going to be a lack of available candidates for non-consultancy CB's

One of the other problems is the significant changes between the FDIS and the ISO versions of 22K have caught many people on the hop and the training courses carried out before the final issue have given people the wrong ideas (such as using PDCA) and everyone is having to re-learn what they thought they knew

Just got back from a drink down at the pub. My latest information appears to suggest that UKAS is coming out with the CB accreditation list for ISO 22K by end of this month.

Good to hear from you again. This is a good suggestion. We have been concentrating too much on UKAS and have ignored the other ABs. Think we should pass the baton to Simon on this one but I hear that JAS-ANZ may have done some work on this standard. Personally, I have no idea and is out of touch.

I emailed our contact at UKAS Charles and he has replied saying he has passed it over to the relevant person. Hopefully I will be able to post an answer soon.

I'm meeting with UKAS tomorrow as a member of the FCB and have been reliably informed that WCS another member of the FCB have been granted their accreditation by UKAS.

I'll be able to update everyone tomorrow afternoon for any other CB's hopefully.

At last news!!! Sorry I forgot to update on this; I did contcat UKAS, but my message got forwarded to somebody who was less than helpful (to put it mildly). I didn't have the time or inclination to get into a spat so I left it.

The CB's are as follows:

BSI, Lloyds, Moody, CI(UK), WCS and QA International.
