Hi everyone,

Do you know if using fasteners such as cable ties as a temporary fix acceptable?

we want to use it on a food contact equipment, it'll be a bright color and metal detectable.

The SQF Code for food product, module 11 is really vague. i want to make sure we are not overlooking any potential risk

Thank you in advance!

Hello Saiyan,

The code you are referencing is 11.2.10.8

Temporary repairs, where required shall not pose a food safety risk and shall be included in the cleaning program. There shall be a plan in place to address completion of temporary repairs to ensure they do not become permanent solutions.

I personally don't feel it's vague, but let's make sure you cover the bases.

Did you:

1) Perform a hazard analysis specifically addressing any possible food safety risks the cable ties could pose (you mentioned bright color and metal detectable, that's a good start and something you would want to document in the hazard analysis)

2) Add them to regular cleaning until they have been removed (you did say these would be temporary, what type of cleaning would need to be done should be documented in the hazard analysis)

3) Have a program that addresses when the temp repair was made, when it will be removed for permanent repairs (ideally the program would address everything on this list)

I will caution you to not perform the hazard analysis with the idea that you are trying to prove that it's ok, that's not the purpose of it. The purpose is to attempt to find all risk associated and if unacceptable risk is involved, you might have to find a different option.

I am sure about what you mean by vague - sounds pretty clear to me.

In general if you plan on using a temporary "fix" number it, put it into log, include it on your corrective action record, check condition etc on each pre-op inspection and get a permanent fix as quickly as possible.

From an auditor standpoint seeing a temp fix I'd be looking at when it was done, the condition, was it a suitable material to be used near or on a food contact surface and I'd want to see the entire documented trail on this particle temp fix.

I do not find the code to be vague but it is nondescript. You have to come up with your own protocol for ensuring cleanliness of the repair in question. We received a demerit last year because we had temporary fixes on one piece (not an issue)with a plan to put a permanent repair (also good) but nothing written down(not good) and no SOP for cleaning specific to temporary repairs(also not good).
