Hi all,

I have been working on an updated metal detection for my company and a 'one best way' system so all staff are following the same metal detection policy. However, I have been looking through retailer COPs and most seem to follow an order of testing as below:

(Well this is the order I think they follow as some aren't too clear?)

1a. Consecutive testing - with gaps - performed start, after breaks and end of shift

1b. Consecutive testing - with normal spacing - performed start. after breaks, end of shift and every 30 mns

2. Memory testing - performed start, after breaks and end of shft

3. Large metal test - performed start and end of shift

4. Fail safe testing - loss of air pressure, reject bin full, sensor failure etc - performed start, after breaks and end of shift

However, my question is - I feel fail safe system testing should come first as you want to make sure they are working before performing other tests?

If I am correct in reading the retailer COPs and this order is best practice, can someone please explain why?

Thank you.

Hi LD,

I attach an oldish version of the COP.

Attached File  COP for Metal Detection&X ray Systems.doc   597KB   53 downloads

This has -

Detector fail safe systems where fitted, must be challenged at regular intervals (minimum start and end of day) to make sure they are effective.

This COP is unusually "thorough" afai can see although lacking with respect to corrective actions.

Kind Regards,

Charles.C

Hi Charles,

Many thanks for this, I agree the failsafe tests are essential. However, in your experience would you feel the fail safe system testing comes first or last in the order of tests?

So for example, when I am re-writing the procedure - I was thinking to train the staff completing the tests in the below order, do you feel the order matters? All tests would be completed at least start and end of shift.

Thank you.
