Food Labelling- opinions

Just want to get your opinion on Food labelling both as a producer and as a consumer

Food Producer Question----Do you think any food product made for you by another company 9 co-packer) should reflect that company's name? -

Consumer Question - Do you think all the private label products you see in grocery stores should , instead of carrying a label that says President's Choice, Tesco etc, should actually tell you who manufactured the product not who owns the product eg in a recall situation?

Any feedback will do.

Thanks

Hi Vu,

I can only answer the consumer question and I would say not too bothered really except for interest, maybe if I liked or disliked the product it may help me make future choices on other foods produced by the same company. Actually I will change my answer to yes.

Regards,
Simon
Hi Simon
yes that same question was fielded to us on one of our seminars in Food science as a food-for-thought question and we all had different takes on it.

In my opinion i think as a consumer yes since , as you put it- it will give me an impression- a quality impression on who really made the product.

But as a producer i also think no since we often control what the co packer does for us.

yes i do!

I think it's disgraceful that the likes of Tesco etc can charge us manufacturers a fortune for customer complaints (about £30 just to tell us, called an "Admin" fee!). If the manufacturers name was on the label then it gives the consumer the option to complain straight to the manufacturer.

It's no wonder Tesco made £2.8 Billion profit last year. Wonder how much of that "profit" was generated from "Admin" fees??? Bet that info is hidden in the depth of some report.

As a consumer i'd prefer to know where my food originated from, so i can make an informed choice on food miles, ethics etc.

In the U.S., at least for all meat and poultry products, the inspection legend shows the USDA Establishment number which can lead to the company name address and phone number through a quick internet search.

The same product is often made at many establishments. If controls are in place to maintain food safety and quailty, I don't see the need to highlight the manufacturer name except for recall or complaint issues. Since these are - or should not be - common events - I think the information needs to be present, but not prominent.

The companies that charge fees for complaints also probably handle many complaints or comments that the manufacturer doesn't hear about - the ones that can't be traced because the package was gone or torn, or the ones tha just can't be verified. They provide the service of weeding through them...at least that's what I'd hope!
Dear vulindlela

AS long as the traceability system is guaranted it is not necessary to write dowm the name and address of the producer on the label.

Sincerely
Esther
