Us old timers use a lot of terminology on the forums and we take it for granted that people understand us. I think we have a duty to start a thread to describe the Slang, Jargon and Abbreviations we use around here.

Please feel free to add to the thread at the bottom and I will amend this first post with any additions.

Dear Simon,

Today when I was going through a thread I came across with term "BUMP". Since I had seen the tread related to terminologies and jargon's a long time ago, it took some time to find it again. My suggestion is to make a comprehensive list of jargon's and make a link at the standard header of each page along with "News" "Events" etc. so that every member can refer it easily at any time.

I would like to add some additional jargons if you permit:

AOA: As-Salamu Alaykum, a traditional Islamic greeting. (Ref. http://en.wikipedia....Salamu_Alaykum)
WYO? What's Your Opinion?

It's a good idea Zeeshan. I can compile a list from what has been posted so far and I will make it some sort of sticky thread or announcement.

Thanks,
Simon
You will now see the forum slang glossary as an announcment at the top of every forum.

Dear Simon
It's a good move.
I must say thanx to Zeeshan for this superb idea.

Most of the time i wonderded what is IMO, BUMP IMEX? Tried once in google search also. Today I thought, I will ask you about full form of these words, but to my surprise I got the answer without asking anything.

Thanx again for making this forum so special.

Tx very helpful for me, too.
Especially IMO
Glad you are all finding it useful. I'm open to any suggestions for making the forums better for all of us.

Simon

Hi Simon, you might also want to add ASP for as soon as possible. That is a well know abbrevaition in South Africa.

A few more -

ASAP = as soon as possible (except for S.Africa where it's ASP :smarty: )
AFAIK = As far as I know

Hey Simon,

I'm knocking myself in the head for missing this particular topic a while back . I think I've finally got a handle on the acronyms in the forum (I can recognize them now at least, though I still don't use them myself much). I don't know if there's a way to advertise this particular tool to new users right off the bat, but I'm sure it would be useful. I don't see it on the top of forum topics anymore. Or just post a link whenever you welcome a new member to the forums! You could also put it in the "Glossary" section, as I've looked there.

Thanks for running the forum, and have a Happy New Year!

Dear KDuf,

And thank you also for this timely reminder. Definitely EP (= Excellent Post )

I have always wondered what IMEX was - I thought it was some Engineering software.

And on a Friday afternoon I'll add TGIF (pretty sure most here know's what that one means!).

New members receive an auto welcome email that includes links to helpful parts of the forum. You can also see that list in my signature (I think). I will add this thread to the list - good idea! By the way anyone can advertise helpful links in their signature...spread the word.

Best Wishes for the New Year!

Simon

I need to go back through the thread, compile them and add them to the top of the thread.
Leave it with me...

WWTP = wastewater treatment plant

et cetera can be shortened to etc - I'll add that.

WWTP is rather spurious, TBH I don't think I've ever heard it said on the forum in 15 years.

BTW TKS for your input.

Something like this ?

What a good way to begin! By being familiar with commonly used acronyms, one will find it easier to understand fully contents in topics and comments.
Thanks for making us newbies know these this timely.
