It has been a while since we were here at the forum, but we are back with a question about cleaning schedules/cleaning records and temporary engineering and modifications:

We have a cleaning schedule for the whole building including the offices. But is it necessary to have cleaning records for the whole building? We think not.
We do not think it is necessary to have cleaning records for the offices and the toilets for the office personal. These are places were no one of the production comes.

About the temporary engineering and modifications: in our business it is really necessary to use temporary engineering like tape or cardboard. People use it so much, that it impossible to control it by registering it. We think that the change of contamination with such a big piece of tape or cardboard is very small. We also wrote that in the hazard analyses. Maybe we can use yellow tape to make the temporary modifications more visible? We would like to know how you think about this.

What is the purpose of a cleaning schedule and cleaning records?

After you've answered the question if you do not see any benefits including the offices and office toilets in the (documented) cleaning programme then don't - you do not have to.

Rubbish! That's what it is rubbish all over the place, do you want to be World Class, or a factory of ragamuffins held together by extraneous matter?

Robert / Jaap, where are you? I hope I didn't frighten you off; I'm OK really (not a psychopath). I just wanted to get you to think some more.

About the temporary engineering and modifications: in our business it is really necessary to use temporary engineering like tape or cardboard.

Temporary engineering should be the exception and not the rule. In an extreme case where a piece of tape or cardboard is ‘really' needed to maintain production then it should be the decision of a Supervisor and the fix should be made permanent at the ‘earliest' opportunity. Otherwise you will end up with dens, wind-breakers and all manner of weird and wonderful contraptions on the shop floor. You'd be amazed by the levels of innovation an Operator can show with a few sheets of corrugated and a roll of tape.

I think maybe you are getting some bad advice, possibly from the engineering or production manager. Temporary engineering can be minimised; it just needs a slight readjustment of the culture and then maybe you will be able to control it more easily.
