It's Official - We are now the 750,000th most popular website
According to this website Netcraft there are 224,749,695 sites on the internet (March 2009). That’s ¼ of a billion. I’m not sure whether their figure means web servers or websites. If it is web servers you can multiply the number many times to find the number of websites on the internet as most websites are on a shared server. IFSQN.com is on a shared server along with dozens of other websites.
Anyway if you take it as websites (which is the lowest estimate) then if there are 224,749,695 websites on the internet and we are the 750,000 most popular then we are in the top 1%. Is that correct?
Regards,
Simon
It depends how trusting you are. I had never even heard of an Alexa toolbar until now.

at least, it seems to be good to have a rank number below 1,000,000

Thanks for putting water on my chips, I can always rely on you mate.Dear Simon,

Alexa collects web visitation (word?) data from users who have the Alexa toolbar installed as you quite rightly say, I don't have it installed so I'm not skewing the results. Alexa has been around for many years, but I don't know how reliable the results are. I suppose it gives an indication of the popularity of a website. It's all relative really, but I suppose for a niche website with narrow appeal this place is quite successful in its own right. Not to rest on our laurels I believe the potential is there for us to reach a position in the top 500,000 by the end of 2010. It’s not unrealistic.
Just think how desolate some website are? Millions must come and go every week. Started with hard work, hard cash and high hopes only to fizzle out like a damp firework. I can empathise with that. The effort needed to get even a modicum of success on the internet is ridiculous and website ownership is definitely for the insane. Unless you think of something like Facebook or Twitter, but then you have to be young to think like that and unfortunately I’m 43.
The latest Netcraft survey indicates there are now 226,099,841 sites on the internet.
The iqfsn website report from Netcraft gives a ranking of 977,234 overall.
Although these numbers are a little "worse" than the others quoted, at least it all comes from the same source. And you're still in the top 0.5%.
Hey thanks very much for that Shane. I've not visited Netcraft since then and was quite amazed to see our position in the site rank league table.I believe Netcraft is probably a better indication than Alexa, and you are already using some Netcraft data anyhow.

Looking at sites directly above I'm sure we can beat some of those, especially http://hobbykoch.blog.de/ - surely.
I think 977,234 is quite respectable for a site such as this. I wonder how much traffic it would take to get into the top 500,000. I suppose its a good Key Performance Indicator I can use.
Thanks,
Simon
I stumbled across this thread from five years ago and thought I would check how we are doing now.
According to Alexa in 2009 we were ranked 750,000 now we are ranked 596,635
According to Netcraft in 2009 we were ranked 977,234 and now we are ranked 697,395
There are 1 billion websites on the internet right now, so we are easily in the top 1% of sites in the world.
Congratulations to Simon and crew for making an amazing website, the users who keep great content flowing, and all of the sponsors that help keep the site alive. Without everyone IFSQN wouldn't be where it is today.
