Hi!

Does anybody know the regulatory status (anywhere) of chitosan as food packaging material?

What would be the specification or requirements for this application?

Any help will be appreciated!

Well FSSM I have never, ever heard of Chitosan, let alone its use for packaging. Can you tell us a little about it?

Dear Simon,

Chitosan is the deacetylated derivative of chitin, wich is a polymer of glucose. Widely distributed in nature, is part of invertebrate structures as crustatian shells, insect exoskeleton, fungi.

The most know use is as a fat encapsulant in food supplements. It´s also used as drugs excipient, has antimicrobial properties, and others, you will find much more information in the next articles.

Hi FMSS,

There has been alot of studies done on chitosan as a coating for food or an addition to packaging polymers to increase the antimicrobial effect to preserve them, but I don't recall any part mentioning the regulation part...

Have been wanting to get hold of some samples for my encapsulation trials, but was worried that it might cause allergen issues as most do come from the sea crustaceans.

You can now find non-animal source of chitosan.

I know that for a indirect contact component, there most be a FC notification to FDA and I can´t find anyone for chitosan, anyway, they are supposed to be for the specific manufacturer that submitted the FCN.
