Storage of Fire Extinguisher in Food Premises

May i know is there any guideline for the storage of fire extinguisher in the premise? Recently i encountered that the fire extinguisher was stored directly on the floor as per attached picture. Is this practise alright? Besides, any regulation on the safety of the storage of fire extinguisher such as not store closely to the high heat machines etc?

Thanks & Best Regards,
Jeremy Yap

Hi Jeremy,

Storage of fire extinguishers should be in an easily accessible place that is clearly identified for health and safety reasons. I prefer them to be hung on the wall and off the floor.

Hi Tony, noted with thanks.

The only food safety issue I would say is that they should be easily cleanable so hung from the wall is a good plan for this. I have seen some very badly designed floor stands which collect water which is obviously a bad idea!
Greetings Jeremy,

It is always recommended to keep at the height of 1.2 meters and by hang only, near the doors, corridors and by side of fire hose reel, and access should be free and easily visible to everyone. There are fire-extinguishers trolleys available (for 20kg) as a option, it is very easy to handle and move can be kept inside the entrance areas by marking the space.

Meanwhile if i find any guidelines for the storage in food industries, i will forward to you.
Hi All,

I do agree. The extinguishers should be accessible, vsisble and should not pose any food safety brisk or employee risk on the shop floor. Conventionally, they are normally hang on the walls and not on the floor.

Definitely off the floor, preferably hanging, and in an accessible place. That means, don´t put anything in front, on top, or in any way blocking access to it. Better yet, paint a red rectangle on the wall right behind where you hang it, so that in case of emergency, you can see it from a distance easily.
Ask your service provider what kind of extinguisher you need for each area. Also make sure they´re being checked by your provider monthly, that they have a security seal so that no one sets it off accidentally, and that they´re recharged annually. Because they´re going to be emptied out by the provider anyway when they get their annual recharging, it would be good if all personnel could practice using an extinguisher right before this. That way, handling extinguishers will become second nature to them, and that way you make sure your provider refills your extinguisher, not just pretends that he did.
Off the floor from my point of view as well. As a pest controller, I often find debris trapped in or behind the extinguisher stands which can and does become infested. They tend only to be looked at by the maintenance contractor and are seldom included in either plant or environmental cleaning plans.

Hi,

As per regulation is there is any specification exist for fire extinguisher sign board.

Thanks in advance.
