Dear All,
Can anyone share me the procedure of FFA & PV determiniation in Raw Nuts?. Is it good to do Soxhlet extraction and then titrimetry or Cold extraction & titrimetry?.
Thanks in advance,
Anish

Dear Anish,
The traditional method IMEX is soxhlet although there are faster methods on the market. a typical procedure is as per attachment -
Soxhlet Method - 1998.pdf 122.62KB 34 downloads
The oil extracted is used for FFA / Acid value determination as below (there are many alternative titration mixes, sometimes depending on the oil)
Method for acid value (B.P.)
Mix 25ml ether with 25 ml alcohol (95pct) and 1ml of phenolphthalein solution (1 per cent) and neutralise with N/10 alkali (few drops). Dissolve 1-10g of the oil in the mixed neutral solvent and titrate with aqueous KOH or NaOH, shaking constantly until a pink colour which persists for 15 sec. is obtained. The titration should preferably not exceed about 10ml.
Acid value = [Titration (ml N/10) x 5.61] / wt. of sample
FFA, if calculated as oleic acid is - %FFA = Acid value / 2.
(2 official methods for above are AOCS Ba 3 – 38 and Ca 5a- 40 respectively if you wish to try some searching)
Peroxide value – sorry, method in my textbook too long to copy. Can probably find on the net.
