Alternative to Glass in a Greenhouse
Started by Yannisg, Jan 26 2011 04:03 PM
Dear Friends,
For both safety at work and for food safety reasons I would like to replace the glass pieces of our glass-greenhouses by another more safe material.
I've found in the literature that PC (polycarbonate) sheets are a good alternative.
Does anyone in the forum have similar experience with greenhouses?
Any ideas, links, practical solutions etc. are welcome.

Not that familiar, but it would seem PC, Lexan, or any of the other clear acrylate-type materials would be potential alternatives. However, you will need to evaluate alternatives with regards to withstanding the rigors of your environment - temperature, sun exposure, humidity, etc. Building materials supplier should be able to provide info.
I did a search on 'greenhouse glass alternatives' and lots of sites pulled up.
One thing to consider is that you may need to conduct a risk assessment to determine if the alternatives pose same/less/more food & employee safety risks. Many glass alternatives are just as brittle as glass, or may become so over time. Some BRC auditors expect that 'glass' addressed in a plant include, glass, hard/brittle plastics, and ceramics.
