Help Choosing A Standard

Our facility has been working on the BRC Standard, which is required by one of our customers for their product. Since our current 3rd party standard (AIB) is expiring in 2 months, we were trying to certify our whole facility through the BRC. Long story short, I don't think we are quite ready to pass, we are probably another 4-6 months out.

I need help deciding on another Standard that is well respected, but maybe isn't quite as comprehensive as the BRC. We manufacture granola based products, bars and clusters.

Dear Anjru,

Welcome to the forum !

It may depend on why you are not ready to pass ??

Hmmm. Personally I wouldn't think that BRC is that onerous in an established factory. I think as well it would look strange to go for another standard, let AIB lapse then BRC a few months later. Why not extend AIB (which you know and are presumably compliant to)?

Also are you really not ready for BRC or are you just doing yourself down? Might be worth getting a pre-audit done to see how close you are from an objective standpoint.
Ultimately your choice of Standard will depend upon your customers' requirements.

Some will say you need the BRC and if you don't you can't supply. If they are not specific, then you have more options. As said previously if you are currently AIB compliant and your customer accepts AIB, why change?

Where are you based and who is your customer?

Hi Anjru,

I don't see AIB as being any less demanding than BRC so can't see what the problem is?

Tony
Maybe SQF 2000 at the easier level (2 I think?)
BRC, SQF or ISO 22000 are all very well respected standards globally. One should not look for an easier option as you will only dilute your food quality and safety by compromising it.

Dear Anjru

I think that your first thought should be about what your customers demand or what is the standard best recognized in the country where you are sellin to.

Other thought what is worth to be considered is about the future. Which standard will survive in this competition between standards and which has a higher posibility of being universaly recognized? Maybe FSSC 22000 certified by a competent CB? I do not know
