Internal Auditor Training - Eastern Half of the US?
Started by SaltSafety, Mar 24 2011 07:16 PM
As required by BRC, the lead auditor must be sufficiently trained. Does anyone know of a good course taking place in the near future in the eastern half of the US? I've signed up for two so far that have been cancelled due to lack of participation.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did end up traveling quite a ways, but attending Internal BRC Auditor training in Minneapolis two weeks ago with Process Management Consulting. Excellent instructor, if anyone is interested!
Contact Jason Young at OK State Univ - training is next week

I have a question regarding the internal audit requirement. I just want some ideas of best practices that you all have found.
Training: Do most companies get one person trained to do all the auditing for the company? This person would not be considered in a deaprtment since the auditor needs to be independent from the department being audted. Or have at least one person from every department trained in internal auditing and audit different departments?

I advise companies to have several people trained as auditors. Your auditing team should include employees from multiple areas, similar to the HACCP team. Having multiple trained auiditors makes it easier to ensure each trained auditor can audit in a department other than their own. Involving more people also helps set up the audit in a way that will include a strong understanding of each area's needs. A good internal auditing program will do more than check up on compliance- it will add value!
I agree. That makes the most sense. We are thinking about having one person get internal auditor training off site and have that person train the rest of the internal audit team, since this will be the most cost effective way. Do you think the rest of the team would qualify as trained, competent auditors?
The code doesn't really define a trained and compentent auditor - you do. If your internal resources include someone who is a good auditor and a good trainer - you can make this work. I find this is good for the first year when enthusiasm is high - but later, there is a need to rejuvinate and improve the program and outside help is often a great benefit.
According to the BRC certified trainer who conducted my interal auditor class, you may have several people attend formal training or just one who will train the others. As far as how many, you minimally need two internal auditors. One person could do the entire facility with the exception of those processes/procedures that that person performs, in which case you need a second person. Ideally, you would have more. It lightens the burden and brings in a diverse point of view.
Go into the SGS website and look under training and be in the look out for this course Internal Auditor fro GFSI BRC,SQF, and ISO 22K SGS will offer in the USA on a Midwest City after August. NSF will have one in July.
I hope this helps.

SAI Global offers a web based course for internal auditing, it was good enough to meet the standard.

AIB also offers a webinar that will meet the requirements.
