Site and building security

We have a (non-purpose built) site with several different buildings, warehouse, workshop etc and we make low risk products such as extracts and flavours.
Do we need secure access to production areas if the site is secure? For example, are we supposed to have swipe card or fob systems to open production building doors or is it sufficient if the site itself is secure with the gatehouse controlling access?

We had to put up fencing and have installed a coded gate . that has sufficed for us. We produce shellfish.
Now if I understand it, the BRC standard doesn't specify that the site needs to be secure per se in terms of having swipe card access etc. It's all about interpretation. I suggest you do a risk analysis on your security and see what you come out with. After all, cards can be stolen, frequently used key pads can become marked where the code is pressed (or the code could be passed on). Companies can give themselves a false sense of security by having key codes. If you have a receptionist and only one entrance plus a policy of challenging strangers, I'd hazard your security is better than some code operated sites I've been to!
