Where to Position a Metal Detector in Catering Process?
Started by hygienic, Oct 19 2011 01:38 PM
Dear All;
We are going to purchase a metal detector for our catering , but I need an advise about the position where it is exactly , where is the best place to fix it?
Is it in receiving area where we receive the goods from the suppliers or in loading area to check the final product ?
Pleas advise me in this matter.
Regards

Hello hygienic,
Before to decide where to fix the metal detector you have to think for what reason you purchase it...
In my opinion, the best place is after packaging, to test the final product. In this case you are sure that your delivered products are safe for consuming and don't contain any part of metall which may create injuries to the consumer.
The goods received from your suppliers are tested as well in this case.
Maybe is good to do also a supplier assessment in order to minimise the risks; if your supplier use a metal detector to test his products before delivery then you will receive a safe product and it is not neccessary to test it twice.
I hope that my answer will help you.
Kind regards, Alina

I agree with Alina,
If you are concerned about the suppliers products being contaminated rather than your own then you could place it on intake, although I don't think I have ever heard of anyone metal detect incoming goods....However if you did find a batch at this point containing metal, at least you wouldn't have wasted time and money etc packing it to then find out it contains metal.
GMP would usually entail the metal detector being on the end of the line as Alina has suggested, and of course always risk assess your suppliers and find out what they have in place to ensure you receive a safe product.

Dear Freinds ;
We have around hundred suppliers , just Image what is the condition of each product received , we can not depends on the cooks to check the product while opening before using for that I am asking if we can eleminate the risk from the begining when we fix the metal detector after receiving step or instead of metal detector we can fix X.ray machine ,any way it is merely suggestion so what do you think , are you agree on that ?

I agree w/Alina the metal detector should be placed at the final step; especially if it a CCP. In the best of worlds, your raw material supplier should be set up the same way.
Hi,
Even I suggest you to put metal detector in delivery area to test final packed product is safe for consumer. Totally agree with Alina.
