Food Safety Auditor
Bsc in Food Science. I got 2 years experience in food industry in QA. I got an ASQ CHA certitficate. I am looking for a path to be Third Party Auditor.
As a Food Safety and Quality auditor, if I had to start over again I would try and get as much industry experience as possible in a wide range of areas. When you become an auditor you have to demonstrate industry experience in each sector that you are auditing eg you cannot audit a meat or chicken processing plant without some industry experience background in that area. So it is a lot easier to claim the auditing scopes if you have a some exposure to the industries.

Thought I would ask for your advice as you are from Australia (me too). I am looking at taking the next step to become a lead auditor (3rd party auditor) within the next twelve months. Is there any training providers that you feel you or someone else can recommend? I want to focus mainly on rural operations (farms etc) and therefore would mostly be looking at qualifications to audit on Freshcare, HACCP, ACOS and various related ISO's.
Also is there anybody who you think would be advantageous for me to contact as a potential employer?

Typically how many years of experience in a sector is considered credible? Does that includes auditing experience? It will be hard to get auditing experience before becoming an auditor (except internal audit).
In addition to industry experience, do I need to look for some sort of license or internationally recognized certificate?

I can only relate to what happens in Australia. Typically you would need to do a Lead Auditor course (5 days) and undertake a number of audits to become registered as an auditor. You would then have to complete training in the required HACCP standards eg ISO22000, BRC etc. Typically you would need 1-2 years working experience / exposure in each industry sector. The best thing to do is ask auditing bodies that provide certification services in your country.

You could try Advancing Food Safety at www.haccptown.com.au for auditor and specialist HACCP training. I think that SGS is now the largest Food Safety certification provider with rural programs.
