Is it possible for packaging to achieve BRC issue 7 for Food Safety?

Hello,

I was wondering is it possible to go for a BRC issue 7 for Food Safety if we are Packaging company? We achieved the BRC issue 6 for Packaging but the managers thinks we could go for BRC issue 7 for Food Safety, becouse all of our materials are used in food area. Do anybody had deal with this already?

No it is not possible.

The latest version of BRC Food Safety is issue 6 not 7.
The latest version of BRC Packaging is issue 4.

If you are a food packaging company then the BRC Packaging Standard (category 1 requirements) is the one for you.

If you are a packaging company I don't see how you can be certified to the BRC Food Standard.

Unless the packaging itself is being physically consumed, packaging materials are outside of the scope of the BRC Food Standard. There may be some borderline examples, but I can't think of any.

At the back of the Food Standard there is a list of the food categories, which is periodically updated by the BRC, and it is this that the Certification Bodies use when determining how and by which auditor the audit is organised.

There is nothing wrong with taking some of the best practice from the Food Standard and developing your systems around these, but a Food certificate issued against a packaging material is likely to be invalid.

As Foodworker says, there is no problem using the Food Standard to inform best practice. However, the Packaging Standard is the one you need because (firstly) you probably wouldn't be able to certify your business against the Food Standard, but also and perhaps more importantly from the perspective of your customers, the Packaging Standard contains some specific clauses specifically related to (for example) product inspection and analysis that they would want included as part of your certification.

Its amazing if the manager want you to move to a standard that has not been released yet. Its important to train the manager that the latest issue on food is Issue 6 and not 7
