Although this poll is not discussing blood borne pathogens, you raise a good question. Should food safety standards mention this and should we be concerned about blood-borne pathogens in food processing environments if bleeding injuries occur?

All:

Do BBPs need to be specified? Would they not already be considered and addressed within the context of our overall Food Safety System?

My BRC auditor last week mentioned that he was part of a beta test for an expanded audit to include social issues (Animal Welfare) & OSHA - human health and safety - concerns. I don't believe that current auditors have the depth and breadth of education or experience to properly evaluate these...neither did he.

I am most familiar only with the BRC Issue 6, SQF edition 7 and FSSC 22000. As far as I have seen, there is no direct mention of blood-borne pathogen considerations in the BRC issue 6. I am not sure if FSSC 22000 directly mentions such considerations. In the SQF standards there are the following clauses under the indicated sections:

Module 5: Good Agricultural Practices for Farming of Animal Products

5.3.1.4 A written policy shall be in place that specifies the procedures for handling livestock feed, and feed contact

surfaces that have been in contact with blood or other bodily fluids.

Module 7: Good Agricultural Practices for

Farming of Plant Products

7.3.1.5 A written policy shall be in place that specifies the procedures for handling product or product contact

surfaces that have been in contact with blood or other bodily fluids.

Module 8: Good Agricultural Practices for

Farming of Grains and Pulses

8.3.1.5 A written policy shall be in place that specifies the procedures for handling product or product contact

surfaces that have been in contact with blood or other bodily fluids.

It might hv also been interesting to add one more panel to inquire as to the voters' personal "probability" that their expressed opinion was accurate ? My prediction would be a maximum somewhere between zero and 50%.

I think that an international standard like fscc iso 22000 that is less dictated by the supermarkets will survive in the end.
