Standard(s) for workwear in Food manufacturing Plant

Greetings!

I would like to ask for your help.

Do we have a standard/ reference for work wear/ uniform for food manufacturing Plant?

Our current practice requires all personnel inside the premises to:
1. Must wear close shoes.
2. Sleeveless is not required.
3. Wear appropriate company provided uniform.

During our last meeting with the directors, one commented that:
1. Are the existing protocol applicable for personnel working outside the food manufacturing plant like offices, shops and other low risk areas wherein the employees do not go nor pass at the open food area? Or only for personnel working inside the manufacturing plant were required?
2. If indeed all personnel, be it food handlers, staff and office personnel requires to conform, do we have reference or standard?

We will resume discussion with the directors next week, once again I would like to ask your assistance. If you have reference or standard regarding Food Manufacturing Plant Work Wear Requirement, I would appreciate it.

Best regards,

IANZ

While searching for the standards i had found some readable things on this site http://www.food.gov.uk ,
They are mentioned safety measures, what should be wore during work of manufacturing and also about rules are there on clothing and jewellery worn.
Hope so will be helpful.
Our plant is divided into a storage area and a production area. Our standards are similar to yours in the production area: open toed shoes are prohibited and shoes must be clean, sleeveless shirts are prohibited and uniform shirts/smocks must be worn inside production. We do not enforce the exact same uniform code in our storage area (also has our shipping area): staff and visitors are allowed to skip the hairnet requirements and also may wear their open toed shoes (typically applies to office gals). Our defense for allowing that is the same one we use for much of our storage area, that no product container is allowed to be opened inside of the storage area and must be moved to the production floor before being opened. It's worked for us thus far and no auditor has ever questioned it.

Dear IANZ,

(Thread Posted in Non-Food Safety Forum
FS does not include Hygiene ? Hmmm.)

(Nearly 1-year old now but it's an interesting topic )

It might have been relevant to inform such as -

type of food ? process ?
wet ? dry ? environment (I'm guessing dry but .....?)
temperature idea ? air-conditioned ?

Most food sanitation textbooks contain (some) suggestions but i doubt there are any fixed standards due parameters like the above.

Hi Ianz,

The way I look at these issues are about the employee safety, and the food security.

Will there be a chance that the employees outside the production facility (office / shop) going into the production facility just because they want to? Is there a restricted access?

If it is possible, then it may be something to consider to have all employees wear closed toe shoes.

About the uniform, it is something that can easily differentiate the employees from the visitor. Therefore, any unknown visitor can be identified. Sometimes the truck drivers did not pay attention and just get in to the plant wherever they see door open in order to get to the office.

Also, we want to try to avoid bringing in something from our house, such as, a lot of people have a dog. They play with the dog and wear the same clothes to work.

In order to avoid that, a lot of companies provide uniform and laundry service. So the employees don't take the uniform home.

Well, this is just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
