Standard(s) for workwear in Food manufacturing Plant
I would like to ask for your help.
Do we have a standard/ reference for work wear/ uniform for food manufacturing Plant?
Our current practice requires all personnel inside the premises to:
1. Must wear close shoes.
2. Sleeveless is not required.
3. Wear appropriate company provided uniform.
During our last meeting with the directors, one commented that:
1. Are the existing protocol applicable for personnel working outside the food manufacturing plant like offices, shops and other low risk areas wherein the employees do not go nor pass at the open food area? Or only for personnel working inside the manufacturing plant were required?
2. If indeed all personnel, be it food handlers, staff and office personnel requires to conform, do we have reference or standard?
We will resume discussion with the directors next week, once again I would like to ask your assistance. If you have reference or standard regarding Food Manufacturing Plant Work Wear Requirement, I would appreciate it.
Best regards,
IANZ

Dear IANZ,
(Thread Posted in Non-Food Safety Forum
FS does not include Hygiene ? Hmmm.)
(Nearly 1-year old now but it's an interesting topic
It might have been relevant to inform such as -
type of food ? process ?
wet ? dry ? environment (I'm guessing dry but .....?)
temperature idea ? air-conditioned ?
Most food sanitation textbooks contain (some) suggestions but i doubt there are any fixed standards due parameters like the above.

The way I look at these issues are about the employee safety, and the food security.
Will there be a chance that the employees outside the production facility (office / shop) going into the production facility just because they want to? Is there a restricted access?
If it is possible, then it may be something to consider to have all employees wear closed toe shoes.
About the uniform, it is something that can easily differentiate the employees from the visitor. Therefore, any unknown visitor can be identified. Sometimes the truck drivers did not pay attention and just get in to the plant wherever they see door open in order to get to the office.
Also, we want to try to avoid bringing in something from our house, such as, a lot of people have a dog. They play with the dog and wear the same clothes to work.
In order to avoid that, a lot of companies provide uniform and laundry service. So the employees don't take the uniform home.
Well, this is just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
