Dear tiger,

SQF defines the terms you refer by -

The pre-farm gate examination addresses topics relevant to those suppliers who grow or farm product such as FSCs 2, 3 and 5. The post-farm gate examination addresses topics relevant to those suppliers who pre-process or process product including FSCs 7 -22, 27, 31, 33 and 34.

FSC = Food Sector category
The numbers are identified on pg 19- 20 of the SQF standard ver.7

Post-farm Gate includes section 2 and section 11. I took this last summer and passed with flying colors. Make sure you pay attention to the introduction section as well as the terminology as well. Good luck

Dear hchristopher,

You mean that Post-farm gate includes FSC =2 = "Growing and harvesting of Animal Feeds"?
Seems strange but I (non-SQF user) believe you

Maybe SQF should have replaced "includes" by 'consists of"

Everyone is audited against Section 2. The pre-farm gate includes Module 7. The post-farm gate includes Module 11. It's a 60 questions, 60 minute "open book" exam.
Module 2 "SQF System Elements" is a section that everyone is audited against.
Pre-Farm gate is everything on the growing/farming/rancher side. The ingredient/food/product that milked or comes out of the ground.

Post-Farm gate is everything from when it arrives to the factory where it is used/turned into something else... etc.

So milking cows/loading the milk truck at the farm would be Pre-Farm gate whereas Post-Farm Gate would be receiving that milk in to a factory to turn it into Yogurt, Cheese, or Ice Cream.

Some companies need both as I understand it. There was a poultry or egg company at my SQF Practitioner training class in January I can't really remember which. On some portions it was considered Pre-Farm some portion was Post-Farm and as i remember it was when the item traveled through a wall... might have been eggs but I can't say for sure.

I believe it was that when the chickens laid the eggs, they were handled there, then through some movement put on a conveyor that traveled into the factory where they were packaged, I guess according to size, color, etc. That packaging portion was Post-Farm gate.

I think the idea behind the term is that to actually imagine a gate between the farm side and the factory side. That are your pre and post farm gate.

Hope that's not confusing if it is unread what I wrote But that's how I see it and I passed Post-Farm gate so I must know something.

module 2 and 11 are included in Post-farm Gate

Yes, see post #4
