Hi
We are a printers that produce labels and I have been asked if it is possible to have a self contained tea room in the middle of the factory so staff do not need to go to the canteen. Can anyone help?
Thanks

Can you provide more information...
Are you BRC/IOP certified?
Do you produce food packaging?
Any other relevant information that might help...
For my part, I would be only too happy to go to the canteen to have a tea or coffee and get off the job for that time.

Along with the questons George asked, is food, along with tea, available in this room? How does it get there? Who cleans it? Are Allergens an issue?
Whatever information you can provide would be helpful!

Hi thanks for this, we are certified to BRC/IoP. We print labels mainly for the spirits industry therefore glass is an absolute barrier. However we occassionaly print for PET bottles and chocolate boxes. As far as I am aware it would only be beverages in the tea room. I think the idea is too speed up tea breaks
Thanks, Ali
Thanks, Ali
Hi Ali,
This is the relevant clause from the High Hygiene Risk Category, there is not a direct equivalent clause in the Low Risk.
6.3.8
Eating (including the eating of confectionery and chewing of gum or tobacco), drinking and smoking shall not be allowed in the production or storage areas. If it is impractical for personnel to leave their work area, local controlled facilities (such as a fully walled area with hand-washing facilities) shall be provided.
Therefore, as long as you control it properly, if it is good enough for High, it should be good enough for Low Risk.
Things to be aware of are:
providing handwash facilties. (You should do this anyway for your operators' benefits). Getting water there is relatively easy, but getting the waste water away is harder.
Washing up facilities
providing safe storage , eg refridgerators
getting the food and drink to/from the room in a sealed container
disposal of waste
