Can Chemical Suppliers be SQF Certified?

Hi all,

I performed a quick search and didn't see anything, so I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked.....

Can you tell me if chemical suppliers can be SQF certified and what are the expectations are under the Code for our chemical suppliers.  We are looking into our chemical costs and our vendors so it is a good time to look at these requirements.

If you're referring to food grade chemicals the answer is yes. If you're talking about sanitation chemicals (as I suspect you are) the don't get certification as far as I know, but our sanitation chem supplier salesman does have SQF and BRC training (it's even prominently displayed on his business card).

1 Thank

Thanks esquef...  So to summarize, our food grade chemical supplier could possibly be certified, however it's not a requirement and our sanitation chemical supplier more than likely will not have an SQF certification.  In choosing a chemical supplier, in regards to complying with the SQF code, what are some of the factors should I consider? and will they be added to our Approved Supplier list?

I have a drafted checklist:

  1. All chemicals on-site will be purchased from an approved supplier that specializes  in the supply and use of chemicals. (In particular, I am looking for a supplier that can come on site and conduct an annual chemical control training.)
  2. Will they provide programs/procedures on:
  • The storage and secondary containment of chemicals
  • The disposition of expired or otherwise unusable chemicals
  • Emergency handling procedures (i.e. spillage)
  • Standards for dilution etc..
