Can anyone provide any guidance on the "scope of certification" requirements? We are a co-packer for frozen fruits and vegetables, and I'm looking to update what our prior SQF practitioner left me with (which is basically step-by-step procedures of what occurs from the time the product arrives, through packing and shipping out). It seems as simple as the food category that we fall under, but then I start second guessing myself. :wacko:

Your scope is exactly what you have stated above. Certification scope relates to the processes that will be certified. You can start with procurement, raw material receival, storage.....etc etc until the product leaves your control (sometimes this is dispatch and for others it may include distribution). Don't forget to check against your flow process chart as it and your scope should be the same.

Yes - scope is start and end. You can also have a description of scope, products included (general). You don't need to list them all - just refer to flow chart.

Scope of Certification The food sector categories and those products to be covered by the certificate of

registration.

Maybe it depends on which "scope" we are talking about ? :smile:

That's what confused me also Charles. What we currently have did satisfy the auditor when we were last audited (under Edition 6), but it just seems repetative of the flow process chart.

Wow, it really does vary by auditor!

Mine told me all I needed was a list of all products divided into their respective food categories. He said ALL as in, even private label brands, not just a generic "apple juice" or "wheat bread".

Your process flow would be part of your raw material risk assessment and haccp plans, so relisting them again is redundant.

Here is from the Policy Manual example posted earlier:

1. Scope of Certification

1.1. The scope of certification covers all food safety management activities that are under the control of (company name).

1.2. The products covered under the scope of certification may be found in Appendix A.

Is this sufficient to cover the SQF requirement 2.1.3.1.iii?

2.1.3.1 A food safety manual shall be documented

and maintained in either electronic and/or hard

copy form. It shall outline the methods the

organization will use to meet the requirements of

this Standard, be made available to staff and

include:

i. A summary of the organization’s food safety

policies and the methods it will apply to

meet the requirements of this standard;

ii. The policy statement and organization

chart;

iii. The scope of the certification; and

iv. A list of the products covered under the

scope of certification.
