Anyone have a chemical control program sample or template?

I am in the process of implementing SQF and am seeing things regarding a chemical control program.  Can anyone tell me if this is required and if so, would anyone have a chemical control program sample or template they'd be willing to share?  Thank you.

Hello B. Nicks,

To make a chemical control program first of all you must have a full list of all your raw materials  in the preparation of their surveillance plans for chemical contaminants. Each raw material is assessed with respect to each chemical contaminant likely to be present and assigned a high, medium, low or negligible contaminant risk level. Next is you have to establish the risk level represents the intrinsic likelihood of occurrence for relevant contaminant/raw material combinations. It is based on facts and data relevant to the raw material, taking into account the local or regional situation and vendor or supplier confidence level of compliance.

Combining the raw material risk level with the vendor or supplier confidence  level of compliance allows to define the minimum testing frequency to be applied for the monitoring of a particular contaminant in a given raw material.

Additional relevant supplementary information is available on internet and related studies so better that you are aware to new emerging hazards on food.

I don't know how attach file but i hope i could help you to start a chemical control program.

Thanks,

Dear B.Nicks,

It is not entirely clear to me what you meant by “chemical control” ? Perhaps you could clarify.

Assuming you are referring to internal/external service type chemicals, SQF glossary mentions  –

Hazardous Chemicals and Toxic Substances

Solids, liquids or gasses that are radioactive, flammable, explosive, corrosive, oxidizing, asphyxiating, pathogenic, or allergenic, including but not restricted to detergents, sanitizers, pest control chemicals, lubricants, paints, processing aids, bio-chemical additives, which if used or handled incorrectly or in increased dosage may cause harm to the handler and/or consumer.  Hazardous or toxic chemicals may be prescribed by regulation as ‘dangerous goods’ and may carry a ‘poison’, ‘Hazmat or ‘Hazchem’ label depending on the jurisdiction.’

The previous post’s attachments give some useful control information on above.

If by “chemical control” you meant including incoming raw materials, etc such as directly referred in haccp plan then post#2 is relevant.

An SQF idea of some of  “control” requirements can be seen for pest control related chemicals in section 11.2.11. Also discussed in Guidance documents for versions 7.1 and 6.

Check out SQFI document Version 7.1 of the SQF Code, lots of information on chemicals.
