Yes, by eye, if yr situation will permit it. Still a popular solution AFAIK.

 

Otherwise it's typically swab > micro., or swab > atp. Or both.

Visual inspection. I use the method of 'if you can't see it, can;t smell it and can't feel it - it can be deemed visually clean. Swabbing is a waste of time and money if the basics of visual clean have not been achieved.

Just because something is visually clean, it doesn't mean it is clean. Don't forget. some micro-organisms can produce a bio-film that can't be seen by the naked eye (such as pseudomonas)  How are you going to verify that equipment is clean? What is your final product micro like?

 

If you don't want to swab (most people probably would use ATP, and get an instantaneous result) , then you could use petrifilm, which could take 2 to 3 days for a result.
