Does daily cleaning need to be initialled by the person completing it?

Does the Master Cleaning & Sanitation Schedule have to include daily cleaning? Currently we have an overview of what and how each piece of equipment is cleaned and have the production lead sign off on it. My question is, do we have to have the daily cleaning initialed by the person completing it?

For who? USDA requires pre-operational and operational (2x daily) checks of sanitation. 

GFSI, depends on what your procedures state. You can get away without actually signing off on cleaning as long as your procedures state that and you have someone checking pre-operational. FDA, one signature on a paper saying its clean will probably satisfy them.

I would say no. On our MSS we have everything that needs to be cleaned on a weekly, monthy and quarterly basis. The daily cleaning and sanitations are inspected by the sanitation supervisor and signed-off on before production starts on a daily basis.

     Assuming you are an USDA FSIS inspected facility, I agree with Jpredmore. Your sanitation-related documents should be initialed at the date/time the activity was conducted. Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) activities - cleaning of non-product contact surfaces - under USDA are typcially done on a less than daily basis, as jpredmore mentioned. MSS documentation can be done by the person conducting the cleaning, but BRC auditors at my plants have also expected a periodic verification inspection.

 

     However, I do beg to disagree with jaySTARR. Operational SSOP monitoring under USDA is to be conducted at the frequency you determine and can support - there is no regulatory requirement that I am aware of for 2x/day monitoring.

     All of this is, of course, predicated on what you have written into your various sanitation programs...

No.  If you include what is required to be cleaned daily in a job description or included it in an SOP then you will just need documentation of training and an annual review of the SOP or whatever document includes this information.

I believe the daily task documentation scramble takes away to much of our time for little gain.

As long as you can show your way works with environmental monitoring, monthly inspections, etc. why not?

On my recent Stage 1 Desk Audit for SQF Level 3 Certification, we received a minor non-conformance regarding this. Our Pre-Op SSOP Inspection form is a pre-operational form that included ensuring that areas were clean (docks, floors, surfaces, equipment), etc. The supervisor would sign off on this before the daily activities began. The SQF auditor in this case indicated that there needed to be a validation signature by someone else stating that the actions did take place (if you've ever encountered SQF, you know that validation is a HUGE part of the certification). We altered the process so that the operators performing the cleaning would sign the boxes and added a signature line for the supervisor or QA personnel to sign off that the actions were completed.
