Philips Screw Approved for Food Contact?
Hello all,
We have some self tapping screws (like the kind with the X indention that you'd use a Philips screwdriver with) in equipment that touches food contact surfaces. All of the direct contact screws I've ever seen were smooth, so does anyone know if this type of screw is acceptable?
If not, can someone provide reference information?
Thanks!
Generally recess points like the X mark in the Phillips head are going to be harborage points. Personally, I would err on the side of not using a Phillips head.
Threaded fasteners in general are points of harborage. Water (and suspended microbes) has great capillarity. Normally on food contact surfaces if threaded fasteners are used, they must be easily removed (not in the case of self tapping) for deep cleaning. I would recommend for due diligence a risk assessment and validation procedure for the equipment.
