Bug Zapper Lights - Packaging Converter Plant
I work for a company that makes food contact packaging. We use bug zapper lights to control the flying insects.
Most of our raw materials and finished products are covered. However, material may be exposed when the pallet or other container has been opened during a production run.
The maintenance manager at this plant used to work for a company that produced and packaged cheese. He said that company required a 10 foot clearance from bug zappers to prevent any insect parts from getting onto raw materials or finished product.
Six months ago we recently obtained SQF Level 2 certification so we are still relatively new to food safety for packaging suppliers.
Does SQF require any clearance area around bug zappers. I already know that we should do a hazard analysis but I am wondering if SQF or equivalent has a specific standard cited anywhere.

13.2.5 Electric insect control devices, pheromone or other traps and baits shall be located so as not to present a contamination risk to packaging, or manufacturing equipment.
So there is not stated distance. You will need to risk assess it.

Most standards including SQF now require located so as not to present a contamination risk or alternatively use glue pad style.
I believe the distance that you quoted came from The AIB International Consolidated Standards for Inspection Clause 4.13 Insect Light Traps:
Critical Requirements
4.13.1.1 Insect light traps are installed farther than 10 ft. or 3 m from food contact surfaces, exposed products, packaging, and raw materials in processing or storage areas.

Another option is to use the Bug zapper technically called Insect Light Trap with the glue board & the power grid is absent . Which means the newer ILT come with blue UV tubes with a glue board & are of 'non-incineration' type.
To avoid repetition it pays to read previous posts.
Clearly it is not a 'zapper' it is a 'trap' there is also a timed roll version.

I would have mentioned using an ILT if Aloysuis hadn't beat me to it. He mentioned it because he was probably scratching his head and saying "huh" with your reference to "glue pad style" as was I.

As Pest Control Operator with food safety accounts in 8 different audit schemes, I do not let any of my clients use "fly zappers." I only use Insect Light Traps with glueboards inside. This is a more sanitary option than glueboards.

I like the glue boards they work the best as others have stated but then the problem I have is my SQF audit showed the bug lights do not meet the glass requirements. "all lights in the building must have protective covers to prevent broken glass from being exposed to product" i.e. shatter shield bulbs only come in fluorescent bulbs not compact fluorescent. any ideas? changing the fixtures for the 3rd. time is a real pain but if there is a glue board with a shatter shield bug light I have not found it yet...
