Is there a requirement for backflow preventers in dairy?
We are constructing a new facility and the site manager wants to install backflow preventers (Watts 9D) on all of our water lines. Each device is $120 a piece and we are already over budget. My Vice President asked me if there is a requirement for these devices anywhere in the any of the required regulatory agencies for the dairy processing sector. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Although I am not familiar with Dairy, I am going to say yes, you do need them since we are also SQF Level II, using modules 2 and 11 and need annual certification of our back flow preventers. We have 6 on our small to medium sized site. Hopefully, things aren't as tight financially as that.

Our current facility has 12 water spigots used for cleaning throughout the facility. The Watts 9D is a smaller ¾ inch device that would be attached to each individual hose line. Currently some lines have it and some do not. The main line that connects the facility to public water supply has a backflow preventer device installed and is monitored. Now if the facility is protected is it necessary for each line to have a backflow device as well? Hope that explains it a little bit better. I guess I’m failing to see the necessity for it if the main water line coming into the facility protected. I’m going to look in the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance.

Not an expert, but my experience is that is based on the design of your plumbing system. You may need a plumbing expert to tell you how many you actually need. Which is actually not a bad idea as they will be able to explain the why's so you can defend the actual number installed. Your location may determine how many you need as well as regulations will vary.
